Smith Academy-Davis Home, Adams Street
This two-story antebellum house was built in 1853 by Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Humphrey and purchased in 1854 by Dr. Carlos G. Smith to be used as a school - the Smith Academy. Dr. Smith's residence was next door. Dr. Smith later became the President of the University of Alabama in 1874. The house is currently owned by Mr. and Mrs. William C. Davis who have completely redecorated it, and have added a deck off the back with a brick-walled terrace below. An outstanding feature is former owner Jessie Dilworth's formal English boxwood garden beyond the terrace. Sketched by Lee Harless, Jr., 1987.
