"The Fearn Home, at 517 Franklin Street, was built by Dr. Thomas Fearn in 1820 and remained in the family until 1964. Dr. Fearn was a physician, planter, state legislator, and trustee of the University of Alabama. He was famous for his pioneering work in the medicinal use of quinine. Along with his brother, he owned and improved the Huntsville water system and was active in building the canal from town to the Tennessee River. "
