• Son of Benjamin and Rebecca (Hall) Applegate, of Tuckahoe Ridge, Mason County, Ky. The Applegate family came from Holland and settled in Pennsylvania. Later one branch emigrated to Kentucky and from there Benjamin Applegate moved to a farm near Georgetown, Ohio, where he reared a large family. - Alabama Biography

• He began the practice of law in Huntsville in 1866, and the following year was elected a member of the constitutional convention called under the reconstruction acts to frame a new constitution for the state.
