• "Son of Benjamin Atkins, a soldier in the Revolution, who lived near Laurens Court House, S. C. Family tradition is that the Atkins family came from England to America in the early part of the eighteenth century. Mr. Atkins was brother of Reed Atkina, whose son, Gen. J. D. C. Atkins, was for many years a distinguished citizen of Tennessee. He was great uncle of Bishop James K. Atkins, and of Dr. Weightman F. Melton of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South." - Alabama Biography
• "He farmed all his life, and was universally known as 'Uncle Tommie.' He lived on what was called the Georgla Road, the main thoroughfare of emigration through that section in the early days. His home was a large, two-story hewn log building that stood about half a mile south of Warrenton and he owned many negroes whose cabins surrounded the residence. The residence and nearly all of the cabins were burned by Federal troops during the War of Secession. Mr. Atkins was an Andrew Jackson Democrat, and for many years was deacon of his local congregation in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church." - Alabama Biography
