• "Son of John and Elizabeth (McDonald) Campbell, the former born near where Staunton now stands, Augusta County, Va., April 20, 1741. who settled at 'Royal Oak' with his father about 1769, and at 'Hall's Bottom,' about 1785, both places near Abingdon, Washington County, Va.; grandson of David and Mary (Hamilton) Campbell, the former known as 'White David, was born in Ireland, March 8, 1706, emigrated to America in 1726, and settled near where Staunton, Va., now stands, in 1739; and of Edward and Elizabeth (Robinson) McDonald, who lived at or near where Abingdon, Va., now stands. The Campbell family originated in Argyleshire, Scotland, the ancestral home in the Highlands of the Clan Campbell. The first of the line known was Doogal Campbell, born at Inverary. His son, Duncan Campbell, was an officer in the English army and in the latter part of the reign of Queen Elizabeth went from Scotland to the north of Ireland. Gov. David Campbell of Virginia says that removal was in 1584. He had a son Patrick; he, a son Hugh; he, a son Andrew; he, a son Duncan, born about 1645, who married Mary McCoy about 1668, and had five children, four of whom are known to have come to America about 1726, from the family seat in Ireland, Drumboden, near Londonderry. They first settled in Lancaster County, Pa., but about 1739, moved to the valley of Virginia, locating in what was then Orange, now Augusta County." - Alabama Biography
