Va., who came to Alabama, and was elected secretary of state, 1822-1824; granddaughter of Gov. Mr. Cresswell was a graduate of Columbia Law School, South Carolina, was a district judge before the War of Secession, and a parish judge for eighteen years after the war. He died September, 1876. Before his marriage to Miss Pleasants, he had been married to Gertrude Thornton, by whom he had one son, Harry Thornton Cresswell, a lawyer, of San Francisco, California." - Alabama Biography
