• Commending Brigadier General Dallas W. Fanning on His Induction into the United States Officer Candidate Training School Hall of Fame: "WHEREAS, highest commendations are hereby extended to Brigadier General Dallas W. Fanning on his induction into the United States Officer Candidate Training School Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, Georgia, on April 6, 2001; and
WHEREAS, he was selected for his prestigious honor through his notable accomplishments of attaining the rank of general, commanding both National Guard and regular Army troops, and for his simultaneous service as Director of the Urban Development Department and Director of the Planning Division for the City of Huntsville; and
WHEREAS, Brigadier General Fanning commands 2,500 troops in National Guard battalions in Huntsville, Florence, and Mobile, and a regular Army battalion based in Fort Lewis, Washington, making him the first National Guard commander to be in charge of a regular Army battalion; and
WHEREAS, Dallas Fanning's military career began in 1969 when he entered the United States Army as a private; he was commissioned as an officer in August of 1970 on completion of Infantry Officer Candidate School and he subsequently attended Signal Officer School and Jungle Operations School and served as a platoon leader in the Republic of Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, following his return from Vietnam in 1972, Dallas Fanning joined the 279th Signal Battalion where he served in every command and critical leadership position; he transferred to the 142d in 1991; attended the United States War College in 1996; transferred to the Headquarters State Area Readiness Command in May of 1998 where he served as Commander, Director of Readiness; and in June of 2000 was promoted to Brigadier General and assigned as the Brigade Commander of the 142d Signal Brigade, Alabama Army National Guard, Decatur, Alabama; and
WHEREAS, among his many awards and decorations are the Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, Humanitarian Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That Brigadier General Dallas Fanning is most highly commended on his induction into the United States Officer Candidate Training School Hall of Fame, and it is directed that he receive a copy of this resolution executed in utmost tribute and esteem." - Induction for Hall of Fame, April 2001
