Notes:
• "Born in Virginia, James Gallaspy moved to Madison County, Kentucky where on May 22, 1806 he married Elizabeth Gwinn, daughter of Matthew and Catherine Gwinn. About 1811 James and Elizabeth removed to the new county of Madison, Mississippi Territory, which in 1817 became Alabama. Their homeplace was located in the upper part of the county near Hickory Flat and Hale Mountain, along the Winchester Road, with the northern boundary of their farm being the Alabama-Tennessee state line. During the War of 1812 James Gallaspy served as a Lieutenant in the Madison Militia and as a private in 1813 in the 16th (Burrus') Regiment 'ordered into service for the defense of Madison County to repel an invasion of hostile Creek Indians'. He also served as a Justice of the Peace for Madison County.
By 1820 James Gallaspy was in partnership with John Angel and operating a general store in the Hickory Flat area under the name of Angel and Gallaspy.
Living nearby and associated with Gallaspy was Thomas Miller also from Madison County, Kentucky. As James and Elizabeth Gallaspy named one of their sons for a Miller, a kinship between the families is suggested but as yet unknown.
Also unknown is the relationship, if any, between James Gallaspy and Jeremiah and Robert Gallaspy/Gillespie, also early residents of Madison County. Jeremiah Gallaspy married Elizabeth (Betsy) McCullough on September 26, 1812 in Madison County and he later died circa 1815 in Giles County, Tennessee. There are several variants of the surname Gallaspy, such as Gillespie and Gillespy, but surviving original signatures of James and his sons show that "Gallaspy" is the spelling they used.
About 1833 James and Elizabeth Gallaspy left Madison County for an as yet unknown destination, perhaps for newly available lands in Mississippi where other members of the family settled.
Their known children are:
1. Catherine Gallaspy, married Lawrence W. Simpson July 9, 1827 Madison County, Alabama;
2. Nancy Gallaspy, born circa 1809, married Samuel Simpson February 11, 1827 Madison County, Alabama, married 2nd Asa Herrin May 1, 1834 in Blount County, Alabama, later lived in Marshall County, Alabama;
3. John G. Gallaspy, born circa 1810, married Rachel Ann Day, died circa 1883;
4. Andrew Gallaspy;
5. James Gallaspy;
6. Garland Burghley Miller Gallaspy, born circa 1823 Madison County, Alabama, married Permelia Ann Day, Captain of Company C, 36th Mississippi Regiment Inf., CSA, died March 8, 1894;
7. Eliza Ann Gallaspy, born March 20, 1822 Madison County, Alabama, married Wingfield Davis August 17, 1838 in Morgan County, Georgia, died April 1903 in Cobb County, Georgia. Most of the children later lived in Lauderdale and Newton Counties, Mississippi." - Davis
