• C. T. opened a garden store in 1934. Over the years the store moved up and down Holmes Avenue Before settling at its current location 2215 Holmes Ave., in 1988.
"The store came about in the 1930s while Cressie Thornton Garvin Sr. was still selling sausage and bologna, his original business.
Across the street from his business on Mitchell Drive was a cotton gin. C. T. Garvin Sr., bought cotton hulls from the gin, ground them up and sold them as feed.
By 1934, while most Americans were still suffering from the Depression, C.T. Garvin Sr. opened his new business."
"C.T. Garvin Jr., better known as Thornton, and his wife, Shirley, operated the store in its final years of family ownership."
