University in 1958, and his Juris Doctorate at American University in Washington DC in 1962. He was admitted to the Alabama Federal Bar Association in 1962 and was elected President of the North Alabama Federal Bar Association. Mr. Garvin worked at the Patent Law Division at Redstone Arsenal Missile Command for 28 years and retired as Chief Counsel before opening his own practice in Huntsville. He was privileged to practice law with his daughter, Sylvia.
John was an active member of St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church and the community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 44 years, attaining the rank of Fourth Degree, served as State Deputy (President) of the Alabama State Council of Knights of Columbus from 1982 to 1985 and was named a Knight of St. Gregory (K.S.G.) by Pope Paul VI in 1967. He served as a board member and legal counsel for North Alabama Habitat for Humanity for 12 years, was active with the Boy Scouts, served as a Hospice volunteer and was a member of the American Legion." - Laughlin
