• "Clemmie Clay and his brother Johnny like their father loved the area and to help with making a living and improving the community, they built a small country store. Then in later years, 1900, Clemmie built a larger store that stood as a landmark in Hurricane Valley until 1983.
A blacksmith shop was built some feet away from the store that Sam Nayman and Jim J. Harbin operated. They could make anything or repair anything a person needed in those days. A big boiler was parked by the shop building for many years. The boiler was purchased for use on the farm for a sawmill and to run a wheat thrasher.
The store served as a post office for families living on the mountain and places the mail carrier could not get to. Clemmie Giles drove a covered wagon to peddle his merchandise in surrounding territories for people to buy and trade their wares for whatever they needed for their family.
Clemmie would blow a conch shell for a horn on the wagon to let the people know that the peddler was near their home. He would stay overnight with different families on the route before returning for more supplies for the next trip.
The store was used as a voting place for that part of the district. Later years a telephone was installed, and scales were installed in a building behind the store to weigh cattle, cotton wagons, and etc. Cattle were driven on foot to market." - McCord
