"Scattered fighting continued until 8.30 a. m., when the Confederates withdrew from the island under heavy fire. They had burned the Zouaves' camp and won a minor victory.'
Huntsville's John Coltart had attracted much attention by his conduct during the assault. 'Coltart, having lost his shoes in the marshes, moved ahead in front of his men, coolly, but intrepidly - encouraging his men with 'Remember the 4th Alabama boys!'
Of the four men from the Madison Rifles who accompanied him, two lost their lives. Private Henry Ferguson was seriously wounded and captured. He died a prisoner three days later. Private J. M. Fry was missing in action and presumed killed. Privates Thomas Graham and Jasper Gilliland survived, Graham even bringing back a prisoner and two captured rifles. All five men from Huntsville had brought credit on their city." - Rice
