• "Mrs. Carmelita Gandy grew up and received her early music education in Meridian, Mississippi. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee where she studied under the well-known and respected composer/conductors John Work and William Dawson.
She received her Master of Music Education degree from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee where she studied under the renowned choral conductor Irving Wolfe. Mrs. Gandy taught choral music for one year in Aiken, South Carolina and thirty-eight years in the Huntsville, Alabama school system. She is highly respected for her dedication and expertise in training and developing the young voice. Her middle school choirs consistently earned superior ratings for their performances at district, state and other choral festivals. In 1991, 1994, 1996, and 1998 her students were invited (through taped audition) to perform with the National Children's Chorus at Carnegie Hall. In 1998 her Huntsville Middle School Treble Chorus was the only middle school choir invited to perform at the prestigious American Choral Directors Association Southern Division Convention in Charleston, South Carolina.
Mrs. Gandy has often served as adjudicator or guest clinician/conductor in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Tennessee. She has twice served as a member of the Alabama Music Education Course of Study Committee. For the past five years, she has served as the Alabama American Choral Directors Association Boychoir Repertoire and Standards chairperson. She serves on the Huntsville Community Chorus Board of Directors, and is the Founder/Director of the Huntsville Boychoir. Mrs. Gandy has served as organist and Sanctuary Choir director at Lakeside United Methodist Church in Huntsville for thirty-eight years. She has received many professional awards; however the most coveted is the Frances P. Moss Choral Directors Award. She received this award from the Alabama Vocal Association at the 2000 All State Choral Festival held at Auburn University. This award is presented each year to a retired choral teacher who has exemplified outstanding and continuous devotion and service to the art of choral music education in the State of Alabama.
Mrs. Gandy is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Alabama Music Educators Association, Alabama Vocal Association, American Choral Directors Association, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and the Fellowship of United Methodist in Music and Worship Arts.
Mrs. Gandy was selected by the North Alabama Conference Fellowship of United Methodist in Music and Worship Arts, to serve as the Children's Choir Director and Clinician for their 2000 Summer Music and Arts Camp held at Camp Sumatanga, Alabama in July of 2000. She served as an accompanist for the 2001 Music and Arts Camp." - ZoomInfo
