•  "David Gardiner was born in South Carolina on 3/22/1810, the son of James Gardiner and Elizabeth Wylie. (See James Gardiner, Madison County) David came to Alabama in the early 1800's. He married, first, Sarah Elizabeth Bell on 2/4/1830. She was born in South Carolina on 10/29/1812. (See Elisha Bell, Sr., Morgan County) David purchased land in 1830. He was a farmer and justice of the peace.

     Sarah's half-sister, Charity Stratford Chunn died in 1852. Charity's children, Elisha L., Mary A., William R., Sarah, and Richard Chunn, lived with David and Sarah. David was the Guardian of the children.
     Sarah and David reared a total of 20 children! Sarah died on 9/15/1871. On 8/11/1874, David married, second, Mrs. Ann Bell Hawkins, Sarah's half-sister. David died on 9/24/1887. He and Sarah are buried in Ebenezer Presbyterian Cemetery.
     One of Ebenezer's most distinguished elders was David Gardiner. 'At his death the Rev. Alexander Penland wrote the following about him: ... One of the members composing Ebenezer Presbyterian Church at its organization, and so far as we know, the last of its original members ... He was ordained an elder in Ebenezer Church in 1850. He was faithful to the flock over which the Lord made him an overseer. He has been known for more than forty years to your correspondent who can truly say he was one of the best men I ever knew.'      Davis Collins Bell Gardiner (11/9/1830 - 7/20/1853)
     Cynthia Ann Gardiner Torbett (4/18/1833-4/1/1855) married Howard Alex Torbett on 11/29/1849.
     William Francis Gardiner (1835-1909) married Margaret W. Mitchell on 4/20/1859
     Elizabeth Jane Gardiner Parker (1837-1892) married Daniel Webster Parker on 12/28/1859
     Mary Ester Gardiner Davidson (1838-1906) married William H. Davidson on 4/21/1859
     Elisha James Gardiner, born in 1840, was unmarried and enlisted in the CSA. He drowned in the Cahaba River in 1863 or 1864.
     John Edward Gardiner, born in 1841, was unmarried and enlisted in the CSA. After becoming ill, he was sent home and died of typhoid fever in 1862.
     Charity Ellen Gardiner Chunn (1844-1899) married Elisha L. Chunn on 1/25/1869
     Matthew Alexander Gardiner, born in 1846, was unmarried. He was killed in the Civil War.
     Sarah Evelyn Gardiner Stogner Nalls (1848-1920) married William Andrew Stogner on 4/25/1872
     Theodosia Posey Gardiner Stogner (8/3/1851-2/6/1895) married 1.) James Baskem Stogner on 12/20/1870 2.) Thomas Richard Nalls on 12/20/1887
     David Columbus Gardier (1855-1916) married Alice M. Bell on 5/22/1878.

     After Sarah and David's daughter, Cynthia Ann, died, they raised her two children Elizabeth Counsel and David William.
     Sarah and David reared a total of 20 children. That does not include the children of their daughter, Theodosia Posey (Lena Pope and James Arthur). Theodosia moved back to her parents' home for a short while after her first husband died. - Huie

"Born January 26, 1836 in Madison Co., Ala. Entered service as a private in April, 1862 at Huntsville, Ala. in Co. A, 49th Ala. Inf. and continued until May 1st. Was made 1st Lieutenant of said company; was captured at Port Hudson, La. Made his escape and joined his command at Cahaba, Alabama and continued in same until the surrender." - Confederate Census
