Track and Cross Country Coach
Notes:
• Graduate of Lee High School and still holds the school record for both the 120-yard high hurdles and the 180-yard high hurdles. - Hall of Fame
• Coached in neighboring Jackson County - Hall of Fame
• "In 21 years as head coach of cross country and track and field at Scottsboro, Esslinger has produced 41 state championship teams - nine in boys cross country from 1971 through 2008, 16 in girls cross country from 1992 through 2009 (including nine in a row from 2001-2009), five in boys indoor track (2001-2005), three in girls indoor track (2001-2003), four in boys outdoor track (2002-2005), and four in girls outdoor track from 1997 through 2003. Those teams totaled nearly 100 individual state champions." - Hall of Fame
• Son of Margaret Lipscomb Esslinger and William "Bill" Hosmer Esslinger and he moved with his family to Madison county in 1952. - Hall of Fame
• Married Betty Sisk in 1981 and his two sons: Rob and Tom. - Hall of Fame
• He also taught biology and his wife, Betty, taught English at Scottsboro High School - Scottsboro Tribute
• This from Betty's page: "Besides beginning my teaching career in 1971, I also married John Esslinger. We met at Jacksonville, and I said that I would marry him if he would live in Scottsboro. We have 2 children. Rob is 37 and lives in Huntsville. He is a mechanical engineer for Redstone. He attended UAH on cross-country/academic scholarship. Rob enjoys his job and travels a lot. In his spare time, he plays polo and fox hunts, not a hobby that I am particularly fond of because the sport is so dangerous. He has broken his elbow twice! I am happy that he has a hobby that brings him so much joy. Tom is 31. He attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile on a track/academic scholarship. He finished a year at Cumberland School of Law, but after coaching part time at Mt. Brook decided to go back to school to become a coach and a teacher. Tom teaches history at Homewood High School and is the head varsity track coach. He married Amanda Webb in December 2005, and she teaches 10th grade English at Homewood and helps Tom coach." - Betty's Bio
• He announces plans to retire from the Scottsboro High science teaching and continue teaching at Northeast Alabama Community College and coaching at Scottsboro High School. - Retirement
