Atkins, was for many years a distinguished citizen of Tennessee. He was great uncle of Bishop James K. Atkins, and of Dr. Weightman F. Melton of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South." - Alabama Biography

His home was a large, two-story hewn log building that stood about half a mile south of Warrenton and he owned many negroes whose cabins surrounded the residence. The residence and nearly all of the cabins were burned by Federal troops during the War of Secession. Mr. Atkins was an Andrew Jackson Democrat, and for many years was deacon of his local congregation in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church." - Alabama Biography
