•  Obituary for his wife reads: "Anne V. Eiland, 72, of Alexandria, Va., formerly of Grafton, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, of cancer. She was a daughter of the late G. Thomas and Fleda Shanks Vance.
     She graduated from Grafton High School and attended West Virginia University for two years where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. After her marriage in 1948, she moved to Tuscaloosa, Ala., where she graduated in 1949 from the University of Alabama. She and her husband, Frederick S. Eiland, owned and published the Cleburne News in Heflin, Ala., from 1949-62. She was an active member of the Alabama Press Association. She also taught English literature at Cleburne County High School.
     After selling their newspaper, the Eilands moved to Huntsville, Ala., where she taught English, journalism and history in public schools. She later served in the public affairs and publications offices of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. After moving to Alexandria, in the 1970s, she volunteered as a docent in the First Ladies Hall at the National Museum of American History and at the National Archives.
     She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Frederick S. Eiland; sons, Tom Eiland, of Portland, Ore., and David Eiland, of San Francisco; daughter, Emily Thomas, of Alexandria; five grandchildren and a great-grandson." - Obituary
