 Early Settler

Born:March 20, 1776, Culpeper County, Virginia
Died:May 10, 1851, Huntsville, Alabama

Notes:

•  "Perry Flynt (1776-1851) was born in Virginia to John and Catherine Flynt and was the grandson of Richard (1720-1792) and Ann Perry Flynt. Richard was a wagoner in Col. William Washington's Third Dragoons of Gen. Nathaniel Green's army at the battle of Cowpens, South Carolina, and the battle of Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina. After the Revolution all of the Flynts moved to Stokes County, North Carolina where Perry grew up and married Martha 'Paddy' Halbert in 1797. Martha, born in 1781, was the daughter of John Halbert who had also served in the Revolution. The 1810 census of Stokes County shows Perry Flynt and his wife on the 26-45 age bracket with four sons under age 10, and one daughter in the 10-16 age bracket. They must have moved west shortly thereafter as we find Perry served as a teamster in the war of 1812, volunteering from Giles Co., Tennessee and being sent to Mississippi Territory under orders of Major James Tatum to Gen. Andrew Jackson's headquarters. Perry received Certificate of Purchase No. 551 dated Nov. 4, 1812, signed by President Madison, for the Northwest quarter of section four, township one, range one, East of the Meredian Line. This quarter section, consisting of 160 acres is located just inside Madison County on the old Mulberry road just South of the village of Lincoln, Tennessee." - Moore
