•  "Joseph Thomas Gibson, COL, US Army Retired, of Huntsville, passed away peacefully on Sunday. He was born in Nashville, TN and graduated from East Nashville High School. He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY and completed a graduate degree in nuclear physics at Tulane University.
     His overseas military assignments included Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. He received numerous decorations and awards to include the Legion of Merit for his years of dedicated service to his country. His final assignment was at the Ballistic Missile Defense Systems Command where he served as the Chief of Staff.
     Upon retirement from the Army, he was employed by Teledyne Brown Engineering. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he ushered, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels for many years.
     He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Adelia Huffman Gibson; daughters, Janet Toenes of Eagle River, AK, and Lynn Whyte of Lakeland, TN; sons, Joseph T. Gibson, Jr. of Friendswood, TX and Stuart G. Gibson of Madison, AL; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Harry E. Gibson and sister, Ann G. Call, both of Nashville, TN, and numerous extended family members.
     Visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow in the church with the Rev. Coy Hallmark officiating. A graveside service will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery, Inc. in Huntsville with full military honors. Laughlin Service Funeral Home is assisting the family.
