Gurley Cemetery The late Percy B. Keel of Madison, Ala., whose family settled around Gurley, did considerable research on his various family branches. The following information was contributed by Mr. Keel including the obituaries. Styles. Wiley Daniel Styles. Born Nov. 6, 1852 - Died June 6, 1927. Styles. Mary A. Styles. Born Oct. 27, 1850 - Died Sept. 2, 1899. [She was nee Smithwick.] Styles. William M. Styles. Born Nov. 7, 1872 - Died March 13, 1873. Styles. Joseph Daniel Styles. Born Sept. 16, 1878 - Died Jan. 2, 1899. Styles. Mary Lavonia Styles. Born Oct. 4, 1880 - Died Aug. 13, 1881. Styles. Grady C. Styles. Born April 9, 1890 - Died Nov. 11, 1892. Mr. Keel also contributed the following information on persons buried in the Gurley Cemetery. This information was taken from The Gurley Herald, a newspaper published in Gurley each Thursday. The date in parenthesis is the date of the newspaper from which the article or death notice was taken. Shackelford. (June 4, 1903. Mrs. H. S. Shackelford (Nee O'Neal) was brought back from Wynnewood, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, on June 2, 1903 for burial in the Gurley Cemetery. Styles. (Sept. 2, 1899). Mrs. W. D. Styles Departed this life Saturday after a short illness with flu. Her death was a shock to her friends for very few knew she was seriously ill. She was a consistent member of the Baptist Church. She was indeed a faithful wife, a loving mother, and a noble Christian. She was buried Sunday in the Gurley cemetery after funeral services by Mr. W. T. Roberts. Collier. (Sept. 7, 1899). Miss Hallie, the 14 year old daughter of Mrs. J. P. Collier, died Thursday at 7 o'clock p.m. She was buried Friday evening in the Gurley cemetery after funeral services at the residence by Rev. D. W. Ward. Fowlkes. (Feb. 2, 1905). On Tuesday morning, Jan. 31, at about 8:30 o'clock, Mrs. Florence Fowlkes died at her home on Section Street, at the age of 44. She was the daughter Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Davis. She leaves a husband, J. W. Fowlkes, and six children, two boys: Earley and Frank and four daughters: Goldie, Rubie, Marvaline and Dorris [Fowlkes]. Interment was made February 1st in the Gurley Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. Reid, Pastor of the M. E. Church at his residence. Beason. (Sept. 5, 1901). Mr. Jonathan J. Beason, well known to the Gurley people, died at his home at Deposit Tuesday from a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Beason was 75 years, 8 months, 24 days old. He has lived a long and useful life and was highly respected by all who knew him. He was a faithful member of the Baptist Church. He was buried in the Gurley Cemetery Wednesday morning by the local lodge of Masons and Rev. Ed. Rice conducted the religious service. Keel. (April 21, 1910). John Keel, son of Mrs. M. E. Davis and the late Steger Keel, died very suddenly at Nashville, Tenn., where he underwent an operation, died Tuesday April 19, 1910 and was buried in Gurley Cemetery on Thursday, April 21, 1910. 40 - (1023)
