Pickens Cemetery William Otey Walton Born Aug. 6, 1851 in Madison Co., Ala. Died Aug. 18, 1852 [Note: This was a small obelisk stone.] In Memory of Jane Pickens Haden 1833 - 1867 This is Clemenza Jane Pickens who married John T. Haden. The late William Drake took me to this cemetery and said she had three very noteworthy sons: Wade Haden, Charley Haden (an ambassador) and Hugh Haden. Ncxt to Janc Pickcns Hadcn's gravc wcrc three unlettered fieldstone in the same row. At thc timc of Janc Pickcns Hadcn's dcath she was living at Summitt in Marshall County. She died in mid-winter during an abnormally cold period. The Tennessee River was frozen over and she was brought back for burial in a wagon. Her brother lived in Madison County at the time and his dog howled all night the night she died but the family did not get word of her death until many hours later. Joseph Pickens 1794 - 1870 Salina Brazelton Pickens 1805 - 1885 Both inscriptions were on a single stone. Joseph Pickens married Salina Brazelton, daughter of Henry Brazelton, 30 Dec 1818. According to the late William Drake, Joseph Pickens was in Madison County with Andrew Jackson's army in thc War of 1812. Whilc thc army was camped in Big Cove he met Salina Brazelton and later moved to Madison County and married her. Pickens Family Information Joseph W. Pickens was born in South Carolina 31 Aug 1794 to Andrew and Margaret (Dondle) Pickens. On 30 Dec 1818 he married Miss Salina Brazelton, daughter of Henry Brazelton and his wife Lydia Ledbetter. Lydia was the daughter of Jacob and Hannah Ledbetter and Jacob Ledbetter was the son of Joel Ledbetter who patented 159.64 acres in Sec. 26-4-1E, it being the SE/4. Joel is shown on the 1812 tax list of Madison County. Joseph W. Pickens died 28 Jan 1868. The Huntsville Advocate of 12 May 1868 described him as bcing a “quict, uscful, good citizcn.” The children of Joseph W. and Salina Pickens were: 1. Andrew G., b. 5 May 1822 in Alabama. He married 1st Susan R. Wright 16 Dec 1857 and 2nd Emily C. Connally 8 March 1854. [Andrew was a physician and lived in Marshall County.] 2. Henry W. Pickens, b. 1 April 1824. Married Lucy W. Nowlin 7 Oct 1845, dau. of the late Wade H. Nowlin of Madison Co. 3. Frances Catherine Pickens n. 12 April 1826, married Leonard Fite Lamberson 12 Jan 1848. 4. Elizabeth E. Pickens, b. ca 1831, m. Preston Mills 20 Jan 1859. She died 9 Sept 1868 at the residence of her mother leaving a husband and two sons. 5. Clemenza Jane Pickens, b. ca 1832, m. John Tate Haden 15 Sept 1853.[His second wf., Mary Ann Miller whom he m. 31 May 1842, had died 3 mo. before. His first wife was Elizabeth Lamberson whom he m. 23 Oct 1833] Clemenza helped raise two children by Elizabeth Lamberson and six by Mary Ann plus at least six of her own. 6. Margaret T. Pickens, b. ca 1834, m. Robert T. Walton 1 Oct 1850 7. Joseph Wm. Israel Pickens, b. ca 1836, m. 1st Elizabeth A. Haden, dau. of John Tate Haden and Elizabeth Lamberson 23 April 1857; 2nd Callie Lamberson 19 Oct 1870; 3rd Emma Judy Dickson. 8. Lydia S. E. Pickens, b. ca 1839, m. Pat Barnard 23 Sept 1869. 9.
