The cemetery is under a large magnolia tree a few yards behind house which is at the end of a lane north off Cherry Tree Road. (Cemetery was canvassed 18 Oct 1972.) A local story says that when Fleming J. Rigney “died,” rigor mortis did not set in (there was no embalming in the county then). The family put nickels on his eyes and held a wake. He turned over. They kept waiting but his body never got stiff and they buried him anyway. The Southern Advocate of 8 Sept 1866 stated that on 4 Sept 1866 Mr. Fleming J. Rigney married Miss Laura E. Sullivan, daughter of Dr. Isaac Sullivan, all of Madison County. Most of this family is buried in the Rigney Cemetery in Section 6-3-2E. William Haughton Rigney Son of F. J. & E. V.
