Inman and Phipps Cemeteries
Inman Cemetery
Location: Section 35-5-1E. Approximate center of the NW/4 and approximately one quarter mile northwest of Russell Island in the Flint River.
There appeared to be many unmarked graves in this cemetery. Mr. Malcom Harris took me to the Inman and Phipps Cemetery. He and his brother had been logging in the area when the discovered the cemeteries. The day we visited these cemeteries, January 26, 1980, the weather was rainy and it had rained for several days intermittently. The “roads” were very bad so we went as far as we could in a pickup then parked it and went the rest of the way in a tractor-like vehicle used to roll logs down the mountain.

Note: The land on which this cemetery is located is the same land that Benjamin Inman patented from the Government in 1831.
Phipps Cemetery
Location: Section 26-5-1E. Approximate E/2 E/2 SW/4 in Opossum Hollow. This is the same land that Joseph Phipps Woodruff patented (W/2 SE/4) Oct. 17, 1831 and next to the land Martha Goodall Phipps patented (SW SW) Nov. 26, 1835. It is approximately three-quarters of a mile northeast of the Inman cemetery.
Note: The locations to both of these cemeteries are approximate. In getting to them we wound around so much that it was impossible for me to be absolutely accurate in locating them on the map. There were many other graves here but none were marked.

On the base of this stone: “W. W. Edwards, H ...[?]” I could not make out the second initial. It was probably the stonecutter. This is a large, well executed, nicely dressed obelisk.
Martha Phipps was not listed in the 1830 or 1840 census but is in the 1850 census as follows:
Phips, Marthy G. 50 Va. $1700
Robert S. 30 Va. Farmer
Lucy T. 16 Va.
