Jenkins Cemetery Jenkins Cemetery Location: Section 9-4-2E. W/2 W/2 W/2 SW/4. This cemetery is actually straddling the line between Sections 8 and 9. The Tennessee Valley Authority's topographical map calls this the Jenkins Cemetery, as do family members, but I could find no Jenkins tombstones. There were Jenkins living in the immediate area according to the 1850 census and a land ownership of 1875 shows a Jenkins owning the land on which the cemetery is located. There are numerous unmarked graves in this cemetery. The family information, in italics, is from the records of Margaret Sanford Connally. Calloway Potts April 22, 1823 Feb. 25, 1905 Masonic emblem on stone. Census of Oct. 24, 2850 Potts, Calloway 27 Al Elsie 27 Al John R. 5 Al Wm. J. 4 Al Chas. Potts was Alsey Ball Wright, dau. of Robert Wright (b. 7 Mar. 1762, died 24 Mar 1848) and his 2nd wife Peggy Calvert. Alsey Ball was gr-dau. of Augustine Wright (d. 1766 Amherst Co., Va. & his wife Alice “Alsey” Ball.)]. J. C. Potts March 12, 1854 Nov. 25, 1881 [This is James C. Potts, son of Callaway and Alsey.] The above three graves are enclosed by a wrought iron fence. I was told that at one time there was a Potts family plot, containing Potts family members, across the drive from the Jenkins Cemetery entrance but it no longer exists and was apparently destroyed. The topographical map shows there to be a Potts cemetery three-quarters of a mile due northwest of the Jenkins. It is on land that is now a dairy and the owners told me they knew nothing of it. The map shows the cemetery would have been under the drive of the large dairy bard. It is almost certain that no stones are now in existence at that location. Ann Cochran was told by the then-owner that he thought the graves were “old Indian graves” and cemented over them. Our devoted daughter, Nina J. Potts, Born Nov. 20, 1881 Died June 21, 1898. L. K.
