above that Charity and James had no children, so this data apparently represents some “guest” family who was taken into the household for a period of time. Additionally, Charity is listed on the 1840 census sheet immediately above James E. Clarke. In the report on the Clark Cemetery of Redstone Arsenal, it is pointed out that Lucy Lanier Ives married James E. Clark in 1837-8, and the census entry shows that James E. Clarke has a wife in the age bracket of 30 - 40. However, according to her tombstone, Lucy was born in 1790, so she may have looked younger than her true age and fibbed a bit to the census taker. Of course, she may have not told her second husband (James Clark) her true age, either, necessitating the erroneous entry on the census record to protect her secret. For comparison of their relative wealth, consider the slave page for this same census, showing that James Clarke had 8 slaves (in his total household of 10), whereas Charity is shown with 20 slaves (in her total household of 25). 15 - (2739)
