of many of the troops who were engaged on December 23, 1864, at Indian Creek, just east of the town of Madison. His familiarity with the area no doubt served him well, but the Confederates still lost the battle in a decisive Union victory. This battle and the only other significant engagement to occur in Madison County during the Civil War are both commemorated with an official Historical Marker on the Village Green along the railroad tracks in Madison. Another item of particular interest is the will that Nancy T. Graham wrote. It was the instrument that ultimately put much of the extensive Dickson and Graham lands under the control of Dr. Rankin by providing that his wife Julia and their children inherit lands from Julia's siblings after their deaths. 31 - (2887)
