Marriage, Death, and Legal Notices from Early Alabama Newspapers: 1819-1893, page v

FOREWARD Work on this book on marriages, deaths and legal notices from Alabama newspapers was started some three to four years ago when the publisher and the compiler of these records discussed putting them into book form. Previously, these valuable newspaper records had appeared throughout the 245-volume collection of Alabama Records done by Mrs. Gandrud and her sister-in-law, and therefore, one would have to scan this whole series of Alabama books to, hopefully, find some information relating to a member of his or her family. Mrs. Gandrud finally decided that the best thing for her to do would be to pull these newspaper records from each of the volumes in which they appeared from Alabama Records and send them to the publisher to Xerox in preparation for this book. When these records were being sorted and arranged for the typist, it was extremely difficult to decide on the exact format and arrangement that these records should appear in, since so many different newspapers were involved over this eighty-year period. A decision was made to try to arrange the records in chronological order by newspaper and by genealogical region. This format did not always follow in each instance, but with over 1500 Xeroxed pages of copy to try to arrange, and in the time frame allotted to do this, we did the best we could. We have provided a table of contents listing the name of each newspaper that records were taken from and years for said paper. This does not necessarily mean that if you see 1820-1821, that every issue for those two years is included, as Mrs. Gandrud may have only found data on one or two months in each of those years. Your publisher does not know whether records for these newspapers exist in their entirety, since we have worked only with what Mrs. Gandrud had abstracted. - (3295)
