WETUMPKA ARGUS and COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER Published and printed in Elmore County, Alabama (Courtesy of Department of Archives) May 15, 1839 It is with deep regret that the citizens of Wetumpka are called upon to pay the final tribute of respect to the memory of their late and highly esteemed fellow citizen.: M.D. SIMPSON, Esq. late Editor of the "Argus and Sentinel" published in this city, who departed this life after a long and lingering illness on Tuesday the 7th inst., aged 33 years. Mr. SIMPSON was a Scotchman by birth, born at Dundee Scotland AC 1804 and came to this country accompanied by his family in 1831 and has been a resident of this city for the last four years, during which time many offices of public trust were confered upon him, the duties of which he invariably discharged with honor to his adopted country and credit to himself. He was ardently devoted to the Democratic cause, but while he was firm in the support of his political views, he ever demeaned himself with a generosity and a spirit of amenity, that won for him alike the approbation and affection of his friends and opponents. He was an esteemed citizen, and kind and affectionate husband, an indulgent father and a devoted friend, few men indeed could have left a better recollection and a purer name. He has left an esteemed and amiable wife, and three promising children, to mourn his bereavement and his loss! A numerous concourse of our most respected citizens, preceded by the military and the Masonic brethren accompanied the body in procession to the place of interment, where was consigned to the keeping of the dust the last sad remains of mortality; bedued by the tears of regret and consecrated by the greeting emblem of Masonic Brotherhood. Which shall convey him to realms of perrenal light. So mote it be. Died on Sunday the 12th of May 1839 in the city of Wetumpka, ELIZA ALBERTHA, daughter of M.B. and SARAH A. MCCOY, aged one year and eleven days Read ye that run the awful truth With which I charge my page A worm is in the bud of youth And at the root of age No present health can health ensuer For yet an hour to come No medicine though it oft can cure Can always balk the tomb Like crowded forest trees we stand And some are marked to fall The axe will smite at God's command And soon shall smite us all. May 22, 1839 Died on Saturday afternoon at the resiaence of his father, WILLIAM JONATHAN, infant son of WILLIAM J. and LAVINIA D. COUCH aged 2 months and 5 days. Page 3, column 4. May 29, 1839 Died in this city on Saturday morning 26th instant, Mr. LAWRENCE SPINNACUTA, Printer, aged 45 years. The Savannah, Ga. papers are requested to copy the above. Page 3, column 5. June 19, 1839 A meeting of the friends and acquaintances of H. BARROW, deceased, was convened at the Council Chamber, on Friday, 14th inst., when DR. J. BEALL was called to the chair, and J.N. LIGHTNER requested to act as Secretary on motion of W.W. MASON, Esq., a committee, consisting of DR. J.T. REESE, W.A. MCCLUNG and M.M. GORMAN were appointed to draft a paper expressive of the regret of the meeting for the death of Mr. BARROW and of their respect for his memory, the committee after retiring reported as follows: The committee in discharge of their melancholy duty in offering this last tribute of respect to the worth of their departed friend and associate, WILLIAM H. BARROW, can but express their unfeigned grief for his untimely loss; nor can they let this opportunity pass without offering their condolence to his immediate friends and acquaintance, and to his relatives and parents at a distance. The deceased had for some time been ardently engaged in the study of medicine and in preparing himself for future usefulness to his fellow creatures; had he 48. - (3348)
