fondly cling to all the little incidents which chequers the path of girlhood and tinges so many of its spots with hues of golden sunlight? But alas! Death comes to all, and we mourn that we shall see her face no more. Removed from the troubles and disappointments of life at the moment of entering upon its stern realities, she is gone, we trust, to that bright spirit land of the blest," where she will dwell forever in the presence of her God. October 6, 1841 Died at his residence in Clark County, on the evening of the 21st ult JOHN MURPHY, aged 56 years. Mr. MURPHY served two terms as Governor of Alabama and was subsequently a representative in Congress from the 5th district. October 13, 1841 Died at his residence in this city, on the 6th inst. of congestive fever, Mr. ELIAS ROBERTS, formerly of Bristol, Ct. in the 64th year of his age, a faithful and devoted husband - a kind and affectionate father a good and an upright citizen, his death is mourned by all as it becomes us to mourn when a good man dies. He was interred with Masonic honors by the Lodge, of which he was a worthy and efficient member. At a meeting of the Wetumpka Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, on the Occasion of the death of Brother ELIAS ROBERTS, it was resolved that the members of the Lodge wear the customary badge of mourning thirty days and that the Secretary cause the same to be published in the city papers. E. Randall, Secretary. The Hartford papers will please copy. March 30, 1842 Departed March 23, Steamboat JNO. DUNCAN with 220 bales of cotton. SMITH, wife of Mr. ALEXANDER SMITH of Coosa County in the 30th year of her age. Mrs. SMITH was the daughter of the late JOHN MCMILLAN of Cumberland County, North Carolina. She was the affectionate wife, the tender mother, the faithful friend, the cheerful consistent Christian. Throughout the whole of life her meek and placid countenance exerted a cheering influence over all around her; and retaining her native serenity until her dying hour, showed then by her faith in Christ, that there was substantial bliss even amid the pains of death. Her life afforded an example worthy of imitation, and her death afforded conclusive evidence that to the truly pious penitent heart, death has no sting and the grave can claim no victory. G. The Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer will please copy. December 14, 1842 Died on the 4th inst of pulmonary consumption at the residence of GEORGE GRAY in Coosa County, Miss MARY C. BULL of Talladega County in the 19th year of her age. December 21, 1842 Died in Talladega County on the 6th of November, Mrs. MARY WATSON, consort of the REV. ALEXANDRIA WATSON, aged 43 years. The partialities of friendship not infrequently prompt extravagant praises of the dead. There are multitudes whose lives exhibit nothing, who, after death, are lauded as having professed uncommon excellencies; yet nevertheless there are those among the departed who were excellent, and who constitute the best subjects for eulogy. To this no one more properly belongs than the lady whose death we have announced at the commencement of this article. Seldom has it been our happiness to enjoy the acquaintance of one so interesting and lovely, for all those virtues which confer peculiar sweetness upon the female character, Mrs. WATSON was surpassingly distinguished. In the social and domestic relationships of life, that sphere which Providence has assigned to woman and where many shine with the brightest lustre, we have known but few more amiable - none more exemplary. She was a consistent member of the Baptist church for 20 years and it may truly be said she was a pious Christian, the affectionate wife, and the kind Mother, yes, and I may add she was a preacher's 57. - (3357)
