December 25, 1869 Died in Tuscaloosa, Alabama December 7, 1869, Mr. JOHN PICKFORD, formerly of Gainesville aged about 36 years. A soldier in the Confederate army during the war. Silversmith by trade and native of Nova Scotia. January 8, 1870 History of Sumter County - Chapter VIII. GEORGE AMASON, Esq. born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina about 1823, removed to this county along with his father in 1835... Fair education... Tall, stout and corpulent. Face oval, dark hair, blue eyes, gait slouchy and dress untidy, yet a man of great humor. He died in 1854. PHILIP S. GLOVER was quite an early settler in Sumter County. A lawyer. Social, frank, lively and gentlemanly. In 1847, was nominated to the legislature. Died in Montgomery before the close of session aged about 40. GEN. JAMES T. HILL, born in Madison County, Virginia, removed to Sumter County in 1843, locating in Livingston. For several years was a law partner of HON. S. W. INGE. In 1849, was elected to the legislature. Died in Livingston about 1854 after a brief illness aged about 45. (Note: In 1850, was aged 40 b. Va.) Tombstone says died 1851, but 1 and 4 often look alike and could be 1854, as age checks. HON. BENJAMIN J. H. GAINES born in Tennessee, removed in early manhood to Sumter, settling near Black Bluff. In the fall of 1857, removed from Livingston to Tennessee and then to NorthEast Arkansas, where he now resides. JAMES P. KENNARD born in Tennessee but in early manhood, he removed to Greene County. Among the early settlers of that county. After remaining a few years in Greene, he settled in Sumter. Clerk of Sumter Circuit Court. Is now living on his plantation near Livingston. Methodist. (Note by Gandrud: 1850 Census says aged 29 born in Nelson Co. Va. Tombstone says born July 3, 1820 died Feb. 20, 1883. REUBEN THOM born in Virginia, settled in Sumter about 1842. Clerk of Circuit Court. (Note: age 20 b.Va. in 1850 Census) JORDAN H. SHORT, a native of North Carolina. Sheriff of Sumter in 1852. Died at his home in Livingston in 1862. (Note: Someone copied death date as 1877 from his tombstone.) January 15, 1870 History of Sumter County - Chapter X HON. WILLIAM WINTER PAYNE born in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1805, removed to Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1825. In June 1826 he married Miss MINERVA WINSTON, daughter of COL. JOHN J. WINSTON. In 1833 settled in North Sumter... 1841, elected to Congress (very lengthy...). DANIEL BROWN WYATT died Thursday morning. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire 24 September 1808. In the winter of 1836, moved to Mobile where he died. Died near LaGrange, Tennessee January 10, 1870, MAJ. EDMUND WINSTON aged about 70 years. January 29, 1870 History of Sumter County Chapter XI DR. ROBERT LARKIN born in Hanover County, North Carolina April 1, 1810. Graduated in medicine at Lexington, Kentucky and soon after settled in Montgomery County, Alabama. In 1832, moved to Perry County and formed a partnership with an elder brother, DR. SAM LARKIN. On 31 January 1833, he married Miss MARY A. TRIGG and removed to Sumter County in 1836, settling near Brewersville... 1851 elected to Legislature. February 26, 1870 Funeral of DR. H. W. HENRY, a citizen of Montgomery. Held at Protestant Methodist Church yesterday, the Presbyterian church of which he is a member being closed for repairs. For the past 2 or 3 years, DR. HENRY has resided in Baltimore, where his youngest daughter was attending school. He died in that city a few days ago, and his remains hereTuesday night. With one exception, Mr. NEIL BLUE, who still survives him, DR. HENRY was doubtless the oldest citizen of Montgomery, having settled here in 1819. Age nearly 80 years (Montgomery Advertiser, 22d). 65. - (3365)
