April 23, 1870 In Memoriam. Mr. TAYLOR BRADSHAW, son of Mr. ROBERT BRADSHAW, of this place, was born in Lexington, Virginia 4 March 1841 died in St. Louis on 27 March 1870 aged 29 years 23 days (lengthy article). June 18, 1870 Died in this town Monday afternoon June 13, 1870 after a long and wearisome illness, Mrs. REBECCA HARTSFIELD in her 68th year, one of the oldest citizens of Gainesville. Relict of COL. SIHON J. HARTSFIELD, who departed this life here in 1850. She was a native of Wake County, North Carolina... (In 1850 Census was age 47 born in NC.) July 16, 1870 Departed this life at St. Stephens, Washington County, Alabama on 28 June, Mr. BURRELL PITMAN BRANTLEY aged 69 years 6 months 28 days. Born in Halifax County, North Carolina, removed to Alabama in 1828 and settled at old St. Stephens in Washington County, where he resided about 4 years. In 1832, he removed to Gainesville and was a citizen of this place until the last of January, when he removed back to St. Stephens. He was therefore one of the earliest residents of this town...for 30 years Deacon of the Baptist Church in this place... (In 1850 Census was age 48 born in N.C.) October 22, 1870 Died at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. JOHN ALEXANDER in Gainesville of yellow disease on Monday evening October 17, Mrs. M. J. MASSENGALE in 42d year of her age. At the family residence in North Sumter, Alabama on the morning of the 5th, of pulmonary consumption, AMANDA, wife of S. P. TOMPKINS in 42d year of her age. Mobile and S.C. please copy. November 26, 1870 Miss CARRIE CHILES, daughter of Mrs. CHILES, formerly of Gainesville, died one day this week at her mother's residence in Greene Co. Mrs. ELIZABETH GATES, an estimable lady and old resident of Gainesville died very suddenly at her residence last Wednesday night of paralyses. (Note: Age 45 b.N.H., in 1850 Census.) We learn with sorrow that REV. C. A. STILLMAN, late Pastor of the Presbyterian Church in this place but now of Tuscaloosa, was bereft by death on Thursday last of a beloved daughter, Miss MARY STILLMAN, aged about 22. She died in Tuscaloosa, where her father had but recently moved, of hemorrhagic malarial fever. December 3, 1870 On Wednesday night last, Mrs. REAVIS, estimable wife of HON. TURNER REAVIS departed this life at her family residence in Gainesville. (Other records show she died 30 November 1870.) January 7, 1871 We learn from Livingston Journal that Mr. DANIEL L. AYRES, Tax Collector of this county died Monday night, old citizen of Livingston. (1850 Census, age 39 b.N.J.) JAMES FERRELL born Ca. 1771 N.C. Married (1) (2) SUSAN , in Greene Co. December 1840. WILLIAM A., married in Greene Co., Ala. 12 Oct. 1839 Miss SELINA ANN FERRELL. 4. BENJ. P. born Ca. 1808 N.C. Married in Greene Co., Ala. 5. BENNETT, born Ca 1811 N.C. Married in Greene Co., Ala. Jan.16, 1834, Miss MARSHA H. FREEMAN born Ca 1799, N.C. 6. EMILY, married in Greene Co., Ala. Jan. 9, 1845 to WM. B. BOYKIN. 7. MAHALA ANN HELEN, bom Ca. 1820 N.C., married in Greene Co., Ala. Nov. 1, 1838 to JOHN W. HARRIS, born Ca. 1816 N.C. She died Nov. 13, 1868 at 48-8-7. 66. - (3366)
