December 4, 1868 Mr. TILMAN HICKS (52 NC Greene Co. Census), an old and esteemed citizen of Greene County died on the 24th inst. (Note: See Alabama Records Vol. XX, p. 27 and Vol. XXXIV, p. 46. Son of ASA, see deeds.) December 18, 1868 JAMES DYE {66 SC), Sen. died lately in Talladega aged 86 years having been married 53 years to his wife, who survives him. HON. A. B. FANNIN for many years a prominent Georgian died of apoplexy in Montgomery on the 10th. HON. LEWIS L. CATO, a well-known lawyer of this state died at Eufaula on the 4th. December 25, 1868 Married in this place at residence of the bride's mother on 23rd by REV. W. B. BINGHAM, SAM'L. H. SPROTT, Esq. and Miss NONIE A. BROCKWAY. Died, Mrs. L. C. BELL, consort of JOHN W. BELL and daughter of CAPT. JOHN and ANNIE TERRELL. Born in Albemarle Dist. S.C. (Albemarle Co. N.C. or Abbeville Dist., S.C.?) Jan. 29, 1836. Soon after her marriage she removed to Sumter County, Alabama thence to Lauderdale County, Miss., where she died November 20, 1868. She had long been a prey to disease... ALLEN ELSTON (68 NJ), one of the first settlers of Talladega County died a few days ago aged 86 years. January 8, 1869 Married on the 31st at the residence of the bride's mother at Jones' Bluff by REV. A. R. SCARBOROUGH, Mr. WM. WINSLETT to Miss MATT. SMITH all of this county. REV. BASIL MANLY, for many years President of the University of Alabama died a few days ago in Greenville, S. C. COL. JAMES DENFORD PORTER, formerly of Marengo County died in Brazil on the 25th of November. Mr. JACK MASON of Lauderdale County was killed by accidental discharge of gun. On the night before Christmas, CAPT. ELIJAH STAMPS (67 NC) of Talladega County died aged 86 years; and a few hours later on the same day, his wife (ELIZ. 57 G) with whom he lived for over 60 years died also. January 22, 1869 Died in this place on the 9th, BETTIE GAINES, daughter of THOMAS and LUCY L. COBBS aged 10... Mr. JOHN D. PHELAN has located in Moulton, Lawrence County. Mr. and Mrs. B. S. BIBB of Montgomery celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the 19th. February 5, 1869 GEN. N(ATHAN) B(RYAN) WHITFIELD of Demopolis died some days ago. February 12, 1869 REV. MURRELL ASKEW, a Baptist preacher of Lauderdale County, while under the influence of whisky or in a fit of insanity a few days ago terribly abused his family and attempted to kill his wife. February 19, 1869 Married on the 15th at the residence of the bride's father near Paynesville by REV. J(AMES) W. PHILLIPS, Mr. NEWTON PRESTWOOD (18 A, son of AUSTIN) and Miss MARY ANN MOORE of this county. COL. JOSEPH J. COOK of Pickens County committed suicide by shooting himself January 31st. MAJ. F. W. RAGLAND of Decatur was shot through a window and killed on the night of the 9th while sitting with his family. Mr. H. V. COUCH, son of REV. A. B. COUCH of Mobile killed a man named HENRY JACOBS in that city. JAMES ALLEN PEARSON, a resident of Mississippi aged 106 visited his grandson in Calhoun County, Alabama last week. He was accompanied by a daughter, the youngest of 16 children and now 50 years old. February 26, 1869 Married Feb. 18th at the residence of the bride's father by REV. JOHN A. ALLEN, Mr. M. B. McDONALD to Miss M. A. HALE, all of Sumter County. 87. - (3387)
