April 16, 1869 Married March 31, 1869 in Lowndesboro by REV. E(THELBERT) S(PENCER) SMITH, COL. W. BREWER and Miss MARY, daughter of the late GEN. D. W. BAINE, both of Lowndes. Died in Gainesville on Thursday morning April 8th, 1869, Mr. JAMES B. TARTT (49 NC), an old citizen of Sumter County. Mr. TARTT was born in Edgecomb County, North Carolina on the 12th day of November, 1800 and was the W, Master of the 1st Masonic Lodge established in this county. WILLIAM B. JONES has been elected Mayor of Demopolis. Tuscaloosa Monitor says there are now three students at the state university. COL. JOHN G. COLTART (25 A, son of SAMUEL) was buried at Huntsville on the 7th. He died in Tuscaloosa. Dwelling of Mrs. ANN E. SANDERS at Tuscaloosa was destroyed by fire a few days ago. ROBERT W. MAYRANT has been acquitted of the charge of murdering WM. M. MOORE of Mobile. JOHN HUTCHISON of Montgomery and a conductor on the Florida Railroad fell from cars a few days ago and was killed by train running over him. An old man named REUBEN ANDERSON living near Spanish Fort, Baldwin County, was murdered by 4 negroes on the 8th. Former residence of JOHN C. PHARES, deceased, in Greensboro was destroyed by fire on the morning of the 4th. Building was occupied by DR. JOHN H. PARRISH and was considered one of the best in Greensboro. April 23, 1869 TROTT & STONE--Real Estate Agents. April 30, 1869 THOS. J. CROW (50 K), one of the oldest citizens of Florence died in that place on the 20th. He settled in Florence in 1821. Miss CHARLOTTE THOMPSON, the accomplished actress, a resident of Lowndes County, will depart for California to fill a professional engagement . May 7, 1869 The Huntsville Advocate says that several cases of small pox have occurred in Morgan County nearly opposite Whitesburg and that two old and respectable citizens, STEPHEN DUKE (42 K, married SARAH DITTO) and WM. DITTO (44 K) have died from it. May 14, 1869 JOHN P. SOUTHWORTH, Esq. of Selma has received appointment of U. S. District Attorney for Alabama. WM. FOWLER, an ex-Conductor on the M. & C.R.R. while crazy from liquor a few days ago, jumped from the train near Tuscumbia and was killed. May 21, 1869 Married on the 13th at the residence of the bride's father by REV. A. R. SCARBOROUGH, Mr. JOHN R. LARKIN to Miss SUSAN A. LEE, daughter of COL. JAMES M. LEE (30 A) all of this county. THOS. W. ROBERTS, Esq. was admitted a member of the Bar of Greene County last week. Mrs. LEVISA DANIEL was killed at Evergreen on the 7th being thrown from a buggy. Mr. FRANCIS E. HARRIS of Madison County was killed a few days ago by a limb falling from a tree and fracturing his skull. The Mobile Tribune announces the death in that city of DR. S. MORDICAI, the oldest physician in the place, having commenced practice there in 1823. ALLEN HARPER, a night policeman of Huntsville has mysteriously disappeared. His family are in ignorance as to the cause of leaving home. It is believed REV. JAMES M. McKEE (1850 Census Lowndes Co. 36 born S.C., 1860 Census Pike Co., 45 SC), a Presbyterian minister of Montgomery was drowned during a recent freshet. His horse and buggy were found a short distance below the road in a swamp. 89. - (3389)
