BIRD of the former place. AUGUSTUS FLETCHER MIMS was born in Sumter County, Alabama November 12, 1840 and died July 4, 1869. For 15 years he has been languishing under wasting hand of disease... JOHN D. SANDERS (50 SC), an old and valued citizen of Pickens Co. died on the 2nd, aged 70. On the 5th, JOHN B. STEWART shot and killed SAMUEL FRANCIS at Decatur. Justifiable homicide. WILEY W. CROOK, an old citizen has been appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue for counties of Calhoun, Cherokee and Claiborne. July 23, 1869 Died--MAJ. THOMAS C. PRINES, a former citizen of this place, who left in bad health some years ago, died and was buried in Mobile on Tuesday . Residence of REV. J. A. FONVILLE, Lowndes County burned. July 30, 1869 Died in Sumter County on 28 July 1869, ROSA KNOX, infant daughter of JOHN M. and MARY McDANIEL. Died in this county on the 20th, PRESTON N., son of DRURY McMILLAN in his 18th year. August 6, 1869 Married at the residence of Mr. L. F. WHITEHEAD near Livingston on the 5th by REV. A. G. GROVES, Mr. J. A. MOORING to Mrs. T. A. HAINSWORTH, all of Sumter County. The 50th wedding anniversary of CAPT. WM. L. (56 SC) and JANE R. McDOW (58 SC) (1812 Vol.) last Thursday the 29th celebrated with a dinner for all their children, grandchildren and neighbors. Fifty years ago, CAPT. McDOW rode on horseback 20 miles to marry his present wife. They were then poor. They soon removed to this state and settled in Greene County. From there they came to Sumter County. By dint of industry, energy and economy, CAPT. McDOW made a fortune. Mrs. LOUISA KAELIN of Selma took poison. W. H. WEBB, a son of MAJ. W. P. WEBB of Eutaw has been nominated for District Attorney by Democracy of Monterey Co. Cal. COL. JOHN T. ABERNATHY, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of North Alabama died at his home near Leighton on the 27th. August 13, 1869 Died at Oxford, Mississippi on the 26th, Mrs. ELIZABETH HINES (40 NC), aged 60. Baptist. Mr. PHILLIP WOODSON, the founder and for 33 years conductor of Huntsville Democrat died in that city on the 4th aged 78. CHARLES CULP, son of AMOS CULP of Huntsville died on Saturday of week before last of lockjaw. Mr. JOHN BONHAM and Mr. JOSIAH PALMER, two old citizens of Montgomery died recently, their respective ages being 84 and 82. Both were natives of South Carolina. A Mrs. PICKETT of Girard, Alabama was killed a few days ago by mistake of druggist who sent the wrong prescription. August 27, 1869 AUGUSTUS BAYALL was drowned on the 15th. Mr. JEFF BURGIN living near Elyton killed last week by accidental discharge of gun. Mr. G. W. SKINNER of Washington County accidentally killed his sister-in-law, Miss MARGARET HILL a few days ago since. She was the niece of GEN. A. P. HILL of Virginia. September 3, 1869 MAJ. JAMES T. DENT, one of the heroes of Lundy's Lane died in Tuscaloosa last week aged 80. 91. - (3391)
