March 4, 1870 Married on the 28th at the residence of the bride's father in Livingston by REV. J. W. PHILLIPS, Mr. D. L. KIRKLAND and Miss IDA E. LOCKARD. Mr. JOHN H. GARY, an old citizen of Sumter and more recently of Mobile has opened a business house in Meridian. An old lady named PATTERSON who lived near Cross Roads in Madison County fell down a stairway of her house the other day and was killed instantly. She was over 90 years of age. The Oxford Rising Star of the 26th says: "Mr. ROBERT PRESKNEL was brutally murdered on Saturday last and his wife is in a serious condition." March 18, 1870 Married on the 10th at the residence of Mrs. ORR in Livingston by REV. A. R. SCARBOROUGH, REV. JOHN P. MAY and Mrs. A. P. BROWN, all of this county. C. C. CROWE of Perry County has been appointed Register of Land Office, Wyoming Territory. There is a letter in the Selma Postoffice addressed to "DR. BLAKE, formerly of North Carolina, who went on a bridal tour to New Orleans Xmas." REV. DR. W. M. CUNNINGHAM, an able and learned divine of the Presbyterian Church and President of Oglethorpe College died of pneumonia at La Grange on Thursday of last week. GOWDEY of Sumter and Miss FANNIE MILES of Bennettsville, S. C. Died at the residence of her father in this county on the 23rd of February last, SARAH FRANCES (5 A), wife of H. F. FOSS and daughter of JOSEPH W. (32 V) and JANE L. JANKINS (19 A); born in Greene County, Alabama on March 8, 1846 and had almost completed her 24th year. Married on 29 November 1869. Mrs. JUDGE A. J. WALKER died at her residence in Montgomery on the 20th. The remains of two sons of EX-GOVERNOR PATTON killed during the war were re-interred in Huntsville last week. The State Journal records the death of HON. WM. RICE, member of the Legislature from Talladega; and brother of HON. S. F. RICE, which sad event occurred in Talladega Wednesday. Residence of GEN. C. A. POELNITZ near Linden, Marengo County was destroyed by fire. Loss $50,000. April 8, 1870 Died on the 27th in St. Louis, ROBERT TAYLOR BRADSHAW (son of R. BRADSHAW, Esq. of Gainesville, Ala.) in his 29th year. In Mobile on the 2nd, Miss P(ERNETIA) M. GARY (2/12 A), daughter of JOHN H. and ELIZA GARY, formerly of Sumter. Several North Carolina families have settled on the NUCKOLL's place east of Huntsville. April 15, 1870 Mrs. T. B. REYNOLDS, widow of the late publisher of Athens (Ala.) Post who died recently, is now conducting the above journal as administratrix. April 22, 1870 DR. GEORGE B. SMITH of Randolph County was killed by lightning on Wednesday of last week. Wife and little daughter knocked down by same bolt. BRADFORD JONES of Bullock County disappeared from his home very suddenly about a month ago. Was known to have considerable sum of money with him so foul play is suspected. 96. - (3396)
