HOLDEN of Kemper Co. Miss, to Miss MARY E. TARTT of this county. February 2, 1872 Died Dec. 21, 1871 at the residence of Mrs. ANN WOOD, his mother-in-law, near Cuba Station, HENRY W. L. McELROY (see his marriage on p. 14) aged 20 years and 20 days. Youngest child of I(SAAC) R(ANSOM) (45 G) and Mrs. NANCY McELROY (47 or 42? G) and was born in Sumter Co. Ala. His remains rest in the family graveyard in sight of the house he first drew breath in. Baptist. Fall from a horse caused concussion of brain. Left a devoted wife, fond parents and other relatives. February 9, 1872 Married on 30 Jan. at the residence of the bride's father in Demopolis, Ala. by REV. A. R. SCARBOROUGH, Mr. S. C. COLEMAN of Sumter Co. to Miss SUE McCARTY of Demopolis. On Monday night the 12th, JUDGE GEORGE B. SAUNDERS (34 V), a resident of Livingston for the last 30 years died at his residence near this place. Estate of SAMUEL SWILLEY, deceased. NICHOLAS SWILLEY, administrator. February 23, 1872 Married on the 31st at the residence of the bride's father by REV. WILLIAM A. SHAPARD, Mr. ALLSON R. WILSON to Miss MARY KATE BYRNES, second daughter of THOMAS BYRNES, Esq. all of Mobile. (1 REV. WM. SHAPARD, cred, in Madison Co. M. E. Ch., 1858----same one?) Died in Livingston on the 2 Feb. 1872, MAJOR EDWARD HERNDON (50 V) after a long and painful illness. Born in Spotsylvania Co. Va. Sept. 17, 1799 and grew up to manhood in the neighborhood of Fredericksburg. In 1817, MAJ. HERNDON removed to St. Stephens, Ala., then the capitol of the Territory and the point to which most immigrants directed their steps. Remained there as clerk in a store some 18 months.... In 1819, he removed to Greene Co. Ala. settling at Erie on the Warrior. In a few years he was elected to office of Clerk of County Court of Greene. In 1830, he removed to the neighborhood of Clinton, Greene Co. and engaged in planting and merchandising and after a couple of years lived in town of Clinton. In 1840, he became a citizen of Gainesville and with the exception of one year passed in North Carolina, he was been a citizen of Sumter for 32 years. Was several times chosen Intendant of Gainesville; was County Treasurer from 1857-1863 and was at time of his death Register in Chancery and Clerk of Circuit Court of Sumter...Mason...Elder in Presbyterian Church...His wife was an invalid for long years.
