April 14, 1877 DR. C. A. JORDAN, a dentist, for many years a citizen of Huntsville died in Memphis one day last week. ELISHA L. CHUNN, a most worthy and estimable citizen who lived in neighborhood of Whitesburg died of pneumonia on 24 Mar. aged 37. JOSEPH HAMBRICK, Esq. died at his residence in this county in the neighborhood of New Market on 21 Mar. last aged about 80. Had been a resident of Madison Co. for more than 60 years... Methodist Church. COL. EDMUND TONEY died at his residence in Triana on 3rd in his 72nd year.... Not a churchman. April 21, 1877 Married on 12 April at residence of MR. J. M. ELDRIDGE, MISS MATTIE J. ELDRIDGE and MR. G. NEWMAN JONES by REV. Z. A. PARKER, all of Madison County. April 28, 1877 GEORGE A. ELGIN died at his father's residence in this city on Wed. night last after a painful illness of several weeks in 25th yr. History of Madison Co. THOMAS FREEMAN and HUNTER PEALE were two surveyors. WILLIAM ACKLEN was born in Tazewell, Claiburn Co. Tenn. Dec. 1802. His father came from Va. and married a daughter of JOHN HUNT. After a residence of some years in Tenn, he removed with his family to Huntsville in 1808. WILLIAM, the son, received his education at Greenville College, Tenn, and read law in office of EBENEZER TITUS in Huntsville in 1822.... He died May, 1872. JOSEPH ACKLIN: A brother of WILLIAM was also a man of energy and ability. Became Federal district attorney for Ala. JOHN ACKLIN: Another brother was a useful citizen of Madison and sheriff of the county. The most celebrated of HUNT'S grandsons was GEN. JOHN HUNT MORGAN: Calvalry Commander who was Maj. General in late war; was a native of Madison Co. 1825 but removed to Ky. while a child. He was killed in a disgraceful manner at Greenville, Tenn. Sept. 24, 1864 near former home of his grandfather. (Mistake corrected in later issue--His mother was a HUNT but not daughter of JOHN HUNT) (Letter from MRS. JACK T. ROARK, 700 Forrest Park La, Nov. 11, 1959. "My husband is a desc. of LEVI COLBERT, the son of LOGAN COLBERT & an Indian woman whose name is unknown to us. We will try to find out more about LOGAN & his wife later but right now we are trying to find out names of LEVI COLBERT's children. His 1st wife was MINTEHOYAS of the Chickasaw nation & his 2nd wife was DOLLY. We have 4 lists of these clin & none of them agree! LEVI d. at his dau's place at Buzzard's Roost, Ala. in 1834. She was m. to a KILPATRICK CARTER. We understand that Ala. has a Colbert Co. supposedly named for this COLBERT family. Is this fact or fiction? A great-aunt lists them this way: MARTIN. LEMUEL, CHARLIE, BENJ. MAXWELL, PHYLLIS (PHILISIA), CHARITY, ACY or ELSIE, ELZISA, MARIAH By DOLLY: ADAIR, ALEX, MORGAN, DOUGHTERY (WINCHESTER), ABIJAH, COMMODORE. and the last list was sent by a coz.
