Marshall County: BARTON S. CLAPP, administrator of WM. CLAPP, dec'd. Mobile County: Runaway slave committed to jail; belongs to SAMUEL THOMPSON of Warren County, Miss. Madison County: Runaway slave committed to jail; belongs to JOHN KIDD of Shelby Co. Ala. March 14, 1840 Tuscaloosa: Fatal Occurrence: difficulty between WASHINGTON MOODY Esq. and MAJOR JOHN CANTLEY both of this city led to a most tragical issue on Thursday last the 5th inst. "It is said MAJOR CANTLEY threatened the life of MR. MOODY." MAJOR CANTLEY died of his wounds; funeral service preached on Friday afternoon in the Episcopal Church by REV. MR. KNAPP attended by the Masonic Fraternity after which the deceased was buried with the usual solemnities of that ancient order. MAJOR CANTLEY... left a wife and several children (Monitor). Negroes for sale at MR. JOHN M. JACKSON's at Moulton--by JAMES MADISON. Forced to sell by dire necessity--prefer selling to one or two persons and will not separate families. Marshall County: JOSEPH M. CARTER, executor of the will of JOHN M. CARTER will make final settlement. Blount County. LEWIS WHITE trustee will sell land of CALEB HARTGRAVES . Marshall County. L. D. BOSHART and J. W. BARTON, administrators of GILBREATH BARTON, dec'd. March 21, 1840 Another veteran of the Revolution gone. Departed this life on the 12th of February 1840 MR. ANTHONY PHILLIPS in the 86th year of his age. He served in the Revolutionary war as a soldier and was entitled to a pension but would not be prevailed on by his friends to avail himself of the same. He alleged as the reason of his refusal that he had enough and did not think it right under such circumstances to draw a pension from the Government. MR. PHILLIPS emigrated from Charlotte County, Va. in the year 1818 and settled in Limestone County, Ala. where he continued till his decease. He was a pious and orderly member of the M. E. Church and had been for upwards of fifty years.... He left five children and a numerous circle of friends and acquaintances ...(communicated) . P.S. The Richmond Enquirer will confer a favor on the friends of the deceased by copying the above. March 28, 1840 Married in Philadelphia on the 11th instant at Christ Church by the REV. BENJAMIN DORR, DR. WILLIAM HEATHE ELDRIDGE of Alabama to MARY JAY, eldest daughter of CAPT. F. A. PARKER of the U.S. Navy. April 4, 1840 Died on the 29th ult. after a long illness ALEXANDER ERSKINE, only son of P. T. POSEY of this place aged eight years one month five days. Died in this place on the 26th ult. of consumption MR. ARCHIBALD RUSSELL, a native of Scotland. If he has any relatives in this country it is uncertain where they live--are supposed to reside near Cincinnati, Ohio. Cincinnati papers will confer a favor by giving the above an insertion. Married on Sunday morning the 22nd ult. before breakfast by the REV. WM. LYLE, MR. SAMUEL STARKEY to MISS MARTHA LANDERS, all of Madison Co. See our Vol. 103 p. 62. Died on Tuesday morning last, THOMAS, third son of COL. THOMAS G. PERCY of this town, in his 17th year. Marshall Co. JACOB DERRICK advertises that horses left with him by ISAAC DANIEL and WILLIS MENEFEE will be sold for their keep. St. Clair County: Letters of administration granted JAMES H. ALLEN on the estate of JOHN R. ALLEN. April 11, 1840 (Communicated) Departed this life on Saturday the 4th instant at her residence 9 miles northeast of Huntsville MRS. PERMELIA SCRUGGS in the 35th year of her age after a lingering illness... affectionate and agreeable companion and fond and indulgent mother. 331 - (3631)
