Obituary: Departed this life at the residence of her son MR. JOHN G(AY) BENTLEY of Madison County on the 28th day of June 1840 in the 67th year of her age, MRS. ELIZABETH BENTLEY, relict of COL. EFFORD BENTLEY, formerly of Cumberland County, Virginia. Descended from a large and very respectable family in Virginia... united herself to the Presbyterian church in Cumberland County some 30 years since. The Richmond papers will please insert the above notice. (Note: see ROBERTSON'S POCAHONTAS and her Descendants, also our HARRIS AND ALLIED FAMILIES. She was dau of DR. WILLIAM GAY & wife FRANCES TRANT.) Departed this life on the 17th of July 1840 at his residence 4 miles east of Huntsville MR. NICHOLAS SHEFFIELD in the 52nd year of his age, of a slow and painful disease... left widow and six children. "Was not one of those busy bodies who meddle with other men's matters." Departed this life after a protracted illness of three months at his residence in the vicinity of this place on the morning of the 9th instant at % past 1 o'clock CAPT. JESSE H. POSEY in the 58th year of his age... disconsolate wife and children. Also on the morning of the 10th instant of consumption JOHN W. POSEY aged 18 years, 3 months (son of CAPT. POSEY). Voice of Sumter. August I, 1840 Letter from corresponding committee of Lauderdale Co. Tippecanoe Club. 1 July 1840; SAMUEL W. PROBASCO, ROBERT M. PATTON, JAMES JACKSON, THOMAS KIRKMAN, JOHN CHISHOLM and ROBERT H. MADRA. Died, near Huntsville on the 26th instant MISS ELIZABETH A. HURD of Bridgport Vermont, aged about 20...a desire to be useful in the world drew her from the happy and enviable place which she occupied in the bosom of her father's family and induced her in the spring of 1839 to become a teacher in the Female Seminary of this town. Died at his residence in this county on the 27th instant GEN. WM. A. AIKEN. Died at his residence in Jackson County, Ala. on the 20th instant, WILLIAM R. VAUGHAN in the 42nd year of his age after a severe illness of 13 days...left widow and large family of helpless children. Also at his residence in Jackson County, Ala. on Friday evening the 24th instant NATHANIEL BYRD, after a few days illness... left widow and six children. Died in the 26th year of her age, at this place on Wednesday the 15th instant after a painful illness of 16 days MRS. ELIZABETH G. wife of SAMUEL MARTIN, merchant. The deceased was a native of Botetourt County Virginia, and daughter of FREDERICK W. and DOROTHY ANN JAMES late of that place, whence she early emigrated to Madison County, Ala. and thence in 1836 to this place where she has since resided (Mason Mississippi Intelligencer).
