October 3, 1840 From Columbia Democrat; Slander of the Dead; (it was charged the grandfather of JAMES K. POLK was a Tory) His grandfather was EZEKIEL POLK and the following is the certificate of CAPT. JAMES JACK who was bearer of the message of the Mecklenberg meeting to Congress; EZEKIEL POLK and THOMAS POLK were brothers, the one the grandfather the other the great uncle of JAMES K. POLK. The ALEXANDERS were his maternal ancestors. CAPT. JACK'S certificate: "Having seen in the newspapers some pieces respecting the Declaration of Independence by the people of Mecklenberg County in the State of North Carolina in May 1775 and being solicited to state what I know of that transaction I would observe that for some time previous to and at the time those resolutions were agreed upon I resided in the town of Charlotte, Mecklenberg County, was privy to a number of meetings of some of the most influential and leading characters of the country on the subject before the final adoption of the resolutions, and at the time they were adopted; among those who appeared to take the lead may be mentioned HEZEKIAH ALEXANDER who generally acted as chairman, JOHN McNITT ALEXANDER as secretary, ABRAHAM ALEXANDER, ADAM ALEXANDER, MAJOR JOHN DAVIDSON, Major, afterwards general, WM. DAVIDSON, COL. THOMAS POLK, EZEKIEL POLK, DR. EPHRAIM BREVARD, DUNCAN OCHLETREE, WM. WILSON, ROEERT IRVIN. Nearly all the names here given were the blood relatives of JAMES K. POLK. The next portion that we have of EZEKIEL POLK's history is that he was a captain in the S C Line and our information is that he was engaged in several actions with the British. He was not so distinguished in the war as his brother or his nephew--all cannot be equally distinguished. The grandfather of JAMES K. POLK on the maternal side was CAPT. JAMES KNOX who served his country in the Revolutionary War, was a brave soldier and a good officer. Our neighbor CAPT. DAVID DOBBINS, a good revolutionary Whig and Democrat served with him. In Marshall County, Ala. at the residence of the late JEREMIAH RODEN on the 22nd ult. JOHN RODEN JR. in his 22nd year. On the 5th ult. in Johnson County, Arkansas after a protracted illness MR. RICHARD T. BANKS, a native of Culpaper Co. Va. Limestone County: REUBEN CRUTCHER, administrator of LEVI CUMMINGS. Jefferson County: M. Kelly, sheriff, appointed administrator of the estates of WM. J. DENTON and NICHOLAS ALLENDER. Morgan County, H. D. MORROW, sheriff to sell property of JESSE BOWERS. Also of KENDALL AXTON. Notice: HARVEY CORNELIUS of Blount County states he will not pay a note given JAMES CRUTCHER. Morgan County. Committed to jail, runaway slave, belongs to SAMUEL BOYD of Benton County. Fayette County: Runaway slave committed to jail; belongs to RALEIGH WHITE of Noxubee Co. Miss. R. H. POSE, sheriff, also one belonging to BRYANT GRICE of Greene Co. Morgan County; land for sale by E. EASTON October 10 1840 Died in Jackson County on the 23rd ultimo MELVILLE BENTON BILES, son of STEPHEN BILES, aged 11 years. October 17, 1840 Departed this life on the 3rd of October at COL. B. COX's, MRS. MARY A. G. LANE after a long and painful illness. North Carolina papers will confer a favor by publishing. Brown's Ferry, Limestone Co. Oct. 3, 1840.
