December 25, 1878 Died in Huntsville, Dec. 19, of softening of the brain, MRS. MARY ELIZABETH NEWMAN, daughter of the late WILLIAM POWERS and widow of the late DR. FRANCIS H. NEWMAN aged 61. Methodist.... DEMOCRAT January 3, 1883 Married, December 21, 1882 at the residence of DR. JAMES HANKIN at Belle Mina by REV. MR. McDONALD, DR. WM. F. JORDAN of Maysville to MISS M. A. DEASON of Trenton (Gibson Co.), Tenn. MR. JAMES McFARLAND of Gurleysville and MISS LAURA J. HUEY, daughter of the late JOHN HUEY of this city were united in marriage at the residence of the bride's mother at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 1883. Died, at the residence of his sister MRS. JOSEPH C. BRADLEY (m. 1838 ISABELLA CLARKE; 29 Va; vol. 16, p. 3; vol. 35, p, 100; d of WM. & SUSAN CLARK), Huntsville, Ala. January 3, 1883, CAPT. WILLIAM CLARKE (app. 84) in his 63rd year. CAPT. CLARKE was a native of Madison County. He was a gallant, chivalrous Confederate soldier, and for four years served as captain in the 17th Tennessee Regt, commanded by COL. (afterwards Governor) MARKS. He was planting last year in the Mississippi bottoms below Memphis, was taken ill a few weeks ago with malarial fever, taken to Memphis and was so prostrated that his son RICHARD CLARKE brought him to his sisters' last Saturday, where he died today. HON. FRANK S. LYON, one of the most distinguished men in Alabama died suddenly at his residence in Demopolis, Ala. last night, aged 83. He..faithfully served his people in the U.S. House of Representatives, as Commissioner to wind up the State Banks, and in the State Legislature. January 10, 1883 Contains long Tribute of Respect to DR. FLEMING JORDAN (46 G), dec'd, by the Medical Society of Madison County. "On Sunday the 24th of December, 1882, in the 79th year of his age, DR. FLEMING JORDAN, honorary member of this society and the oldest practitioner of medicine in this County ceased his earthly labors...he was a native of Georgia and moved with his parents to this county in early childhood. He graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in March, 1829 and in July of that year married MISS LUCY J. MOORE.... Married, in the Church of the Nativity by the rector REV. DR. J. M. BANNISTER, MR. STERLING LANIER of Birmingham to MISS MARY LOU BANNISTER, daughter of the rector. Died, at the residence of his son in law JAMES E. FLETCHER (12 A; EDWD A.), in Huntsville, January 5, 1883, MR. SAMUEL MATTHEWS in his 85th year. MR. MATTHEWS (51 V) was bom in Brunswick County, Virginia December 12, 1798 and came to Madison County about 1818-19, afterwards removed to Limestone County, and became a citizen of Huntsville in 1858...member of the Presbyterian Church... left a large circle of friends and relatives. Died, at Decatur, Ala. January 6, 1883, DR. FRANCIS W. SYKES (31 NC) of Lawrence County, Ala. DR. SYKES was a native of North Carolina and at an early age came to Morgan County, Ala., afterwards settling near Courtland, Lawrence County. He represented Lawrence County repeatedly in the Legislature and in the Constitutional Convention of 1875. A Democratic Legislature elected him to the U.S. Senate since the War but a radical senate refused him his seat. January 17, 1883 One JOHN BROAD, an Englishman, died in Atlanta in 1881 leaving 240,000.... JONATHAN BROAD, a brother and MRS. TOMMY MAYNARD, a sister, and heirs of 2/5 of the property live in the vicinity of Huntsville. JONATHAN BROAD and TOMMY MAYNARD, coal miners on the mountain adjoining Huntsville employed JOHN J. McDAVID to represent their interests. Died, near Whitesburg January 12, 1883 MRS. CAROLINE R. McGEHA wife of JAMES M. McGAHA (21 A; JAS), aged 48...devoted wife and mother...member Methodist Church. 379 - (3679)
