MERCURY 1885 January 4, 1885 REV. PETER M. MAPLES (to pp.) died of paralysis at his residence near Bethel Church in this county on Wednesday, January 7, 1885 in his 81st year. He was a native of East Tennessee and one of the pioneer settlers of New Madison, coming here in the year 1830. Shortly afterward he purchased his present homestead at the public land sale and resided there until his death. He was the beloved pastor of the Primitive Baptist Church at Bethel about thirty years. WILLIAM ROUTE and family from Meridianville leave tonight for Texas, their future home. MR. JOHN T. PATTERSON died at his residence in this city last Wednesday night, in the 58th year of his age...buried in the City Cemetery Friday morning from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church under the auspices of the Order of the Odd Fellows, participated in by the Knights of Pythias and Knights of Honor "each of which he was a member.” MR. PATTERSON was one of the few surviving veterans of the Mexican War, in which he contracted a chronic disease of dearrhoe and never recovered. He leaves a widow and several children. February 11, 1885 (inside page marked February 4...they often failed to change) Died at Mt. Adams, Arkansas 23 January 1885 MR. WILLIAM B. BRADLEY in his 51st year. MR. BRADLEY was born and reared in Huntsville, a brother of MR. JOHN BRADLEY and MRS. THOMAS W. WHITE of this city. He moved to Arkansas a number of years ago. Died in this city Sunday morning DR. DAVID D. SHELBY in the 71st year of his age. He was buried Monday morning, with funeral services at the grave by DR. BANISTER. Some time before his death he had practically retired from active practice of medicine. As a husband and father he was kind, affectionate and indulgent... one of the most thoroughly and punctiliously honorable men the world ever knew. February 18, 1885 Mooresville. DR. J. W. and C. C. WITHERS, twin brothers and sons of DR. J. S. WITHERS, have been up on a visit from their Arkansas home. We regret to learn of the death of MRS. COLEMAN in Athens Monday night, full of years...she was the venerable mother of MESSRS. DAN and FRANK COLEMAN of this city. Died, Monday afternoon, MARTHA EASON GORDON, wife of GEORGE S. GORDON...buried from the Church of the Nativity. March 4, 1885 Died in this city Sunday morning NICHOLAS DAVIS, of tubercular menengitis. He leaves a wife and two children, SHELLY and RODNEY. (Half a column, Resolutions by the Huntsville Bar; W. L. CLAY's tribute stated that before the age of 19 he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the State.) Died at his home near Florence last Saturday morning ex-Gov. R. M. PATTON in the 78th year of his age. Funeral services were held in this city last Monday at the Presbyterian Church, conducted by DR. J. H. BRYSON. (Gives copy of funeral oration.) March 17, 1885 Died, February 9, 1885, MRS. JANE JENKINS aged 83 years 11 months, SISTER JENKINS had been a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for 68 years. F. J. TYLER March 26, 1885 Died Saturday, MR. ENOCH CARLTON ELLIOTT in his 23rd year. The remains of MRS. WALTER ROBINSON reached here Sunday night from Georgia and buried from the Methodist Church Sunday noon, REV. JOHN A. THOMPSON officiating. MRS. ROBINSON was MISS BIRDIE MOORE. To the bereaved husband and the family we extend sympathy. (note--daughter JUDGE WM. HENRY MOORE, great-niece of GABRIEL MOORE. KPJ) MRS. F. M. TAYLOR, lately a resident of this city died in Memphis, Tennessee Saturday. The remains were brought to Huntsville and buried 387 - (3687)
