February 7, 1883 The terrible death of MAJOR JON's MARTIN at Stevenson. MAJOR J. F. MARTIN, for more than thirty years Agent of the Memphis and Charleston RR, and of the Express Company, at Stevenson, was run over by the incoming train Friday night and was so injured that he died at 8 o'clock next morning. MAJOR MARTIN was about 60 years old, a man of splendid physique and proverbial high character. MAJOR MARTIN leaves a wife and four children, two of whom are grown. MISS GLENN ORR, daughter of HON. J. G. ORR of Danville was enrolled as a pupil and boarder at the Seminary last week. MR. WILLIAM PAUL, son of MR. JNO A. PAUL of this county died Sunday afternoon from shock caused by amputation of leg. (JAMES ALEXANDER PAUL was his father. KPJ) COL. RICHARD JONES. This old and well known citizen of Lawrence County died at the residence of his daughter, MRS. JOSEPH WHEELER, last Saturday morning. For many years prior to the war COL. JONES was prominently identified with the history of North Alabama. A man of considerable wealth and influence, he was a power in his day. He was ninety one years of age. February 14, 1883 Account of "a shooting" between FISHER OLDFIELD and DANIEL MOSELEY, well esteemed citizens and merchants at Hazel Green. OLDFIELD's clothing was penetrated with 117 birdshot but he escaped unhurt. MOSELEY did not escape so well...2 buckshot in left breast and one in the stomach but reported getting well. February 21, 1883 MRS. FINNEY, wife of J. W. FINNEY the son of JONATHAN FINNEY died suddenly on Tuesday last in the vicinity of this place. Scottsboro Herald. We regret to hear of the death of MR. BENJAMIN SANDLIN (50 in South Carolina, Morgan County) which occurred near Hartsell on Friday the 9th instant. He was about 65 years old. Decatur News. STAPLER, Esq. in Rogersville Wednesday last the 7th instant. Lauderdale News. Our whole community was shocked last Sunday morning on hearing of the death of DR. J. Y. CANTWELL which occurred at the residence of his niece, MRS. R. D. HORTON, on Bank Street (Decatur) The beautiful MRS. WADE HAMPTON, JR. nee MISS KATIE PHELAN, is visiting her cousin, DR. JAMES R. BEASLEY. DR. W. F. McMULLEN, a former Huntsville boy, is visiting his family and friends. DR. McMULLEN has been living for some time in Drew County, Southeast Arkansas. The Scottsboro Citizen of last week (tells that) WILLIE SPOTSWOOD, his sister, and also an aunt, who reside in Huntsville, recently fell heir to 5000 acres of valuable land near San Antonio, Texas. MISS LUTIE SPOTSWOOD, married, as our people know, the REV. CHARLES E. CABANISS, late of Huntsville, but now in charge of a flourishing Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas. The people of Scottsboro will be pleased to learn of the success of WILLIE and LUTIE SPOTSWOOD. The Commencement Exercises of Hospital College, Central University at Louisville were held the 14th instant. First on the list of graduates is WILLIAM M. BANISTER... received a gold medal... third son of REV. J. M. BANISTER. Died at the Stegall Hotel Monday, February 18th, MARY K. wife of J. R. STEGALL...consumption... daughter of MRS. THOMPSON residing near Meridianville. She was a devoted member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. February 28, 1883 Alabama Courier (Limestone County). In Vancent County, Texas, MR. OSCAR L. JOHNSON, formerly of this county, was united in marriage to MISS FANNIE HILL, on the 12th instant. JOHN HAMMERLY (50 in Virginia) was born in Leesburg, Louden County, Virginia September 11, 1799 and died at Athens, Alabama February 16, 407 - (3707)
