TAYLOR" was 70 years of age, and was a man who commanded the respect and esteem of all his acquaintances. He was the father of MR. SHELL TAYLOR. MRS. P. HOLMES DRAKE, wife of COL. JAS. P. DRAKE, died at her residence near this city Thursday, February 11th, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, but a resident of this county more than a score of years. (Death Record: PRISCILLA H. PETTUS (38 in Virginia) took its flight...he was, perhaps, one of the oldest residents of this county, having moved here from Halifax County, Virginia with his father's family in 1832. He died in his 81st year on the same place he had lived more than half a century. He was married in 1836 to MARTHA BROWN ALLEN (volume 24, page 1), in Limestone County, Alabama, who passed away only about two years ago. Having survived his other brothers a number of years he was especially kind to their sons. To his surviving son and daughter and grandchildren, we would say "Weep not..." (Death Record: SAMUEL J. PETTUS, born in Virginia aged 80 years, 7 months, 24 days died at Cluttsville February 1, 1892...widower) March 2, 1892 Died--CHARLES E. PEEBLES, of Mooresville, Saturday. THEO LACY formerly of Huntsville, but for 20 years making his home in South Alabama. March 23, 1892 One of the best, as well as the most loved women in the county has just passed away at her home near Monrovia in the 78th year of her age. This was MRS. MARY A. PETTUS, aunt of MR. R. E. PETTUS and mother-in-law of MR. JAMES THOMPSON. Burial took place Monday in the family burying ground. (MRS. MARY A. C. PETTUS born January 2, 1815, died March 20, 1892; 1850 Census; 35 in Virginia, wife of THOS. W.) Died--Sunday morning, MR. SAM HOLLOWAY, a resident of Huntsville for a few years. March 30, 1892 MR. W. H. HALSEY, an old Huntsville boy, now at Atlanta, Georgia spent yesterday in our city, guest of his cousin MR. THOMAS W. SMITH. Anniston Hot Blast. The Hot Blast had a visitor yesterday. REV. B(ENJ) D(ENNY) TURNER (39) , one of the most interesting men of the day. He is nearing his 82nd year, moved here in 1832 when this was known as the Creek Purchase. In the fall of that year it was made Benton County. The old gentleman informs us Alexandria was then known as Coffeytown, and it was there our county site, Jacksonville, was first proposed. His present wife was an infant at one of his first sermons...he afterward married her to her first husband. Eleven years ago she became his wife, after a widowhood, and now he exihibits the wonderful curiosity of a smiling, prattling six months old boy and a hoary headed father four score years. He does not look over 60. Died, at Decatur Wednesday, MORGAN T. McGAVOCK about 38; left two brothers, business men of Athens. April 6 1892 MRS. LIZZIE THOMPSON a most estimable lady, died Wednesday night at the residence of MRS. ROBERT H. WARE, Meridian Street. A letter from Greenville, Texas dated March 25, 1892, stating "Lately I came across the muster roll of CAPT. PEYTON S. WYATT's Co. of Huntsville, Alabama. Volunteers who came to Texas, in December, 1835 I think, to assist...in throwing off the despotism of Maxico. Over 56 years have passed and it is doubtful if a single one survives for most of them were with FANNIN at Goliad and were massacred. Among 416 - (3716)
