April 20, 1892 It is with profound regret we announce the death of MRS. SUSAN C. ERSKINE on Sunday last, April 17th at the residence of her son-in-law, MRS. JAMES H. HASTIN. MRS. ERSKINE was in the 88th year of her age, and one of the oldest residents of Huntsville. She had lived here since early childhood, her father, COL. ALBERT RUSSELL, a Pennsylvanian by birth and LT. COL. in the Revolutionary Army having moved from Loudon County, Virginia* to Alabama in 1816 when she was quite young. She was born near Leesburg, Virginia in the year 1805, her mother's maiden name being ANN FRANCES HOOE. In the year 1820 she was married to DR. ALEX ERSKINE whose name has long been identified with the history of Huntsville as one of its earliest and most prominent physicians. By this marriage there was a large family of children of whom most of the surviving members are yet residents of this place. She was of Scotch Irish descent, a Presbyterian by ancestry, and has been for over 65 years a member of the Presbyterian Church of this city.... Peaceful be her last sleep! (* DAR Lineage Book 142, page 132 gives ALBERT RUSSEL's rank in the Revolution as Lieutenant only. He lived in Maury County, Tennessee for a time, before coming to Madison County, having gone to Maury County in 1807.) April 20, 1892 DR. BRYSON received a dispatch from the officers of the Presbyterian Church at Montgomery informing him of the death of DR. (DEWITT) BURKHEAD Monday evening and asking him to conduct the funeral service. DR. BURKHEAD had charge of the Presbyterian Church here from June, 1876 to May, 1879. He was a native of North Carolina, a graduate of the Theological Seminary, Columbia, South Carolina, Chaplain in the Confederate Army and for several years pastor at Athens, Georgia. From here he went to Paris, Texas and spent several years. His last charge was Montgomery, Alabama. His family will have the sympathy of friends in this community. April 27, 1892 With sorrow we announce the death of ARTHUR HARRIS, only child of DR. GEORGE M. HARRIS, at his residence Sunday night. "Whatever sins he was guilty of were only sins against himself." He was devoted to the wife and baby he leaves behind. (Death Record: ARTHUR LEE HARRIS, aged 35, born in Alabama, "no occupation," died in Huntsville April 25, 1892...married.) 417 - (3717)
