HARRIS CEMETERY (4) LOCATION: Sec. 14-3S-1W. NE NE SW NE. Off Blue Springs Road in the Lakewood Subdivision in northwest Huntsville. HARRIS, JUDITH W. - In memory of Judith W., wife of Richard Harris. Born May 24, 1775 - died Nov. 18, 1837. HARRIS, RICHARD - In Memory of Richard Harris, Soldier of the Revolution, & of the Cross. Born Nov. 20, 1758 - Died Jan. 23, 1853. Note: The census of Oct. 23, 1850 shows Capt. Harris, age 91, living with his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. George and Eliza P. Wharton, and holding property valued at $5000. The Southern Advocate of Feb. 9, 1853 published the following, in part: "Died, in Madison County, Ala., Jan. 23d, 1853, Capt. Richard Harris. The deceased was born in Powhatan Co., Va., on the 20th November, 1758. When but a youth, at the age of 17, he entered the army, and with that veteran band of soldiers, fighting for liberty and truth, devoted himself to his country's interests till the close of the war. He was an eye-witness of the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Little York. After having shared with his countrymen the hardships of war, he returned to his home and friends to enjoy that glorious boon, liberty, for which he had so earnestly contended. ... He professed religion in Powhatan Co., Va., and soon after united himself with the M. E. Church, where he remained, for more than half a century ... He removed from Virginia to Madison County, Ala., in 1809 and resided near Blue Spring till the day of his death." Note: Capt. Richard Harris was the son of Benjamin Harris and Ann Epps Harris of Southam Parrish, Cumberland Co., Va. Judith W. Harris, his wife, was the daughter of Benjamin Sims of Cumberland County, Virginia. HARRIS, WILLIAM - Born Feb. 1, 1796 - died April 13, 1831. ELDRIDGE, MILLICENT T. - Millicent T., wife of William Harris. Born Dec. 25, 1799 - died Sept. 12, 1867. Note: Millicent T. Garson -M- William Harris 9-26-1816. After his death she married John R. B. Eldridge. IC7 - (386)
