September 23, 1823 Married Saturday evening the 20th by REV. MR. ENGLES, MR. ROBERT ORRELL of Alabama to SARAH MATILDA, daughter of MR. THOMAS PHILLIPS of Newark, Delaware. September 30, 1823 PROF. ALVA WOODS of Columbiana College, Washington, D.C. and MISS ELMIRA MARSHALL, daughter of JOSIAH MARSHALL were married in Boston. Note: This couple later lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where DR. WOODS was President of the University of Alabama. P.J.G. October 11 1823 DON MIGUEL ESLAVA, an inhabitant of Mobile died 17 September in the 83rd year of his age. He was a native of Mexico and entered the Spanish service at an early period. In Louisiana and the Floridas he served his country in various civil and military employments for upwards of 40 years. When the United States took possession of Mobile in 1813, DON MIGUEL remained there. November 5, 1823 JAMES ERWIN of Cahawba, Alabama and MISS ANN BROWN CLAY, 2nd daughter of the HON. HENRY CLAY of Lexington, Kentucky, were married 21 October. November 14, 1823 MRS. F 77 ROSE, sister of MR. MADISON, late President of the U.S., died 4 October 1823 at Huntsville, Alabama. November 28, 1823 JAMES S. GAINES died at his residence near Cahawba, Dallas County, Alabama 20 November aged about 45 years. December 13, 1823 HON. HARRY TOULMIN, late a Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Mississippi died at his residence in Washington County, Alabama 11 December 1823 in his 57th year. He was descended from a very ancient and respectable family in England. He was born at Taunton, Somersetshire. His father was DR. JOSHUA TOULMIN. He became a dissenting minister at Chowbert, Lancastershire, came to Norfolk, Virginia in 1793, removed to Kentucky, and in 1794 was appointed President of the Transylvania Seminary there. He held high offices in Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama (long account). August 23, 1824 CAPT. JOS. H. ASHBRIDGE aged 33 years died 18 July at the residence of C. FRAZEE in Baldwin County, Alabama. He was formerly of Philadelphia. At a very early age he commanded an East Indiawan but on the declaration of war, joined the Navy and so distinguished himself with KEARNEY and LAUGHTON off Charleston in such a manner as to draw from a number of his senior officers letter of the warmest approbation. On the return of peace he resigned his commission and had command of some of the boats on the Mississippi till about two years ago when he was employed on the Columbus on the Alabama. September 29, 1824 JOHN CARR died in Autauga County, Alabama 26 September in his 60th year. He was from Albemarle County, Virginia. January 20, 1825 JOHN BECK died at Cahawba, Alabama 26 December 1824. He was a Representative in the Legislature from the County of Wilcox. March 28, 1825 "CAPT. JOHN GRAHAM died in Madison County, Alabama 21 March 1825, in his 71st year. CAPT. GRAHAM was an officer of the Revolutionary War, and distinguished himself under GEN. MARION in South Carolina. He was taken captive by the British, and confined 8 or 10 weeks in Camden Jail. After his release, continued throughout the war. He has left 11 children, 6 sons and 7 daughters; 90 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, 13 sons and daughters-in-law." 610 - (3910)
