KING-VOORHIES CEMETERY (9) LOCATION: Sec. 17-3S-1W. C. W/2 NW SW. KING, JOHN DIXON - [He was born in 1795 and died in 1862]. KING, MARY CHEATHAM - [She was born in 1799 and died in 1859]. Note: The headstones which once marked the graves of John and Mary King have disappeared. They are buried within the wrought iron fence enclosure in this cemetery. They were the parents of Carver D. King and the great-grand parents of Bessie [King] Russell, a well-known teacher, librarian of this county today. VOORHIES, THOMAS M. - August 10, 1822 - Dec. 3, 1903. VOORHIES, MARY - In Memory of Mary Voorhies. Born 23rd day of June, A. D., 1790 - died 29th day of June, A. D., 1865. An affectionate mother, a faithful wife, a devoted Christian. She hath her reward. KING, CARVER D. - Born in Nancemond Co., Va., March 18, 1818 - died February 18, 1894. KING, LUCY A. - Born Feb. 3, 1821 - died March 11, 1901. Psalm 119, Vs. 105. KING, THOMAS V. - Born August 18, 1846 - died December 14, 1864. Note: Thomas V. is the son of Lucy A. and Carver D. King. Lucy had made Thomas a uniform in preparation for his entry into the Confederate Army in 1864. He contracted Typhoid Fever and died before leaving home and was buried in the unused uniform his mother had so lovingly made. KING, MARY L. - Born May 28, 1848 - died June 4, 1886. Census, Oct. 26, 1850: King, Lucy (28) Tenn. Carver ( 6) Ala. William ( 5) "Thomas (4) " Mary ( 2) " Miranda ( 1) " Note: At the time of the above census, Carver D. King (husband of Lucy) was in in California, having joined the gold rush to the West in 1849. He returned to Alabama in 1851 with only one gold nugget to show for his efforts but he is quoted as having said he "sure had lots of fun". 175 - (394)
