PERKINS CEMETERY (11) LOCATION: Sec. 33-3S-1W. NE SW NW SW. Located directly behind Morton Hall on the Huntsville campus of Alabama University off University Drive. A low, white picket fence surrounds the graves. PERKINS, MARIA LATETIA - In Memory of Maria Latetia Perkins. Born September 13, 1823 - died January 15, 1852 aged 28 years, 4 months and 2 days. (Note: This was a box-type tomb.) PERKINS, WASHINGTON LAYFAYETT - In Memory of Washington Layfayett Perkins, born February 1, 1827, died January 20, 1849, aged 21 years, 11 months and 19 days. (Note: Box-type tomb). ----(Note: There was a box-type tomb here but the cover which carries the inscription had been removed and there was no way of identifying it.) ----(Note: There was a "sink" here indicating an unmarked grave.) PERKINS, ALEXANDER SPOTSWOOD - Bom December 24, 1831, died January 24, 1867. (Note: This was an upright marble monument). Census, October 29, 1850: Perkins, Alexander (21) Ala., farmer Graham, Abner (18) " " Ward, John (50) Va. Sarah (50) Va. Samuel, Jr. (21) Ala. Wells, Mary E. (60) Md. Thompson, Thomas W. (14) Va. Note: One Joshua Perkins and family are listed in the 1830 census. JONES CEMETERY (12) LOCATION: Sec. 33-3S-1W. N/2 NE SW SW. Due northwest of the Student Union Building and several yards east of the Perkins Cem., above. JONES, MARY - In Memory of Mary, wife of Anthony Jones, died June3, 1865, aged 53 years. Note: This stone is broken and lying on the ground but it is protected by a white picket fence like the one surrounding the Perkins Cemetery. The University is responsible for placing the fences around these cemeteries. The census of Oct. 29, 1850 shows the following Jones living on the farm adjacent to Alexander Perkins, above: Jones, Alex. P. (50) Va., farmer - $46,000. This is undoubtedly the same Jones family as that of Mary and Anthony Jones. 177 - (396)
