OLD UNION GROVE CHURCHYARD CEMETERY LOCATION: Section 3-3-2E. SE SE NE. Off County Lake Road. This cemetery is shown as the "Union Cemetery" on the TVA maps. The west half of this cemetery is a Negro cemetery. The east half is the old Union Grove Churchyard cemetery and only white people are buried there. The old churchyard covers approximately two acres, is covered with vinca minor, and probably has 200 unmarked graves in it. It is located on the very edge of Madison County Lake. The Giles family plot was enclosed by a fence: GILES - Thomas Giles - 1881 - 1933. [Note: This hand-made cement marker was in the gateway to the family plot. It may have been taken out of the cemetery by vandals and dropped there.) GILES - Our Father. Thomas F. Giles. July 25, 1861 - Nov. 18, 1933 GILES - Maria M. Giles, wife of Jos. W. Giles. April 3, 1828 - March 8, 1920. Rest, Mother, rest in quiet sleep, while friends in sorrow o're thee weep. GILES - J. W. Giles - Born Apr. 10, 1827 - Died July 26, 1863. [Note: Joseph W. Giles -m- Maria M. Morring Feb. 20, 1851 (MB-4A)] GILES - Lafayette J., son of J. W. & M. M. Giles. Born Dec. 3, 1850 - Died Aug. 30, 1863 GILES - " G. W. G." GILES - "A. B. G." GILES - "M. E. G." GILES - "J. G." ] ] ] ] Note: These graves were marked with fieldstones on which the initials only were carved. I assume they were all Giles family members. EATON - Cornelius, son of J. M. & M. A. Eaton - Born & Died Feb. 6, 1881 EATON - Willie P., dau. of J. M. & G. A. S. Eaton - Born Nov. 26, 1875 - Died Aug. 30, 1883. Note: John M. Eaton -m- Gilly Ann Sophonia Giles Nov. 12, 1873 (MB-7) Note: The following graves were scattered over the rest of the churchyard. PENCE - T. J. Pence, Died March the 17[?], 1899. (No other information on this hand-carved fieldstone.) ---- In about the center of this cemetery was an ancient cut stone above-ground tomb. It had been torn down by vandals and we could not find any identifying marks. Next to it was another grave marked by unlettered fieldstone. HALL - J. W. Hall - Born 1852 - Died......(Bottom half of this hand-carved fieldstone broken off and missing. Next to this grave is the grave of the child listed next. ---- (Note: It is anyone's guess what this means. It is a child's grave.) CHANDLER - Annie Chandler. Born Dec. 1, 1854 - Died July 31, 1881. Mother. At rest. BURDINE - In Memory of S. F. C. M., Daughter of J. J. & E. C. Burdine. Born Sept. 24, 1851 - Died Sept. 3, 1861 Aged 9 Years, 11 Months, 9 Days.
